If you are flying into Philly take the train ($5) into the city and walk, walk, walk. A car is really suicide because of the narrow streets and lots of traffic. There is GREAT CHEAP public transportation too. You can really see it all in a couple of days if you keep moving.

see the art museaum, boathouse row at night, Rittenhouse square, Old City, Society Hill, Independence Hall. Don't forget to eat eat eat! In the last decade or so, Philly has really established itself as owner of some of the country's best restaurants. Whatever you do, don't miss a late-night cheesesteak run, Pat's or Jim's.

I live in Philly. You will love it. A wonderful walking, eating entertainment city. Unfortunately there is much construction going on around the liberty bell and independence square. I'd suggest you inquire about the light show there at night, Kathy

Tip 1: don't drive. Streets are narrow and crowded, drivers are insane, and cheap parking is nonexistent. Walk and ride public transport.
Tip 2: eat a REAL Philly steak sandwich, a street pretzel, a shoo fly pie, and a grinder. If you're daring, eat some scrapple for breakfast.
Tip 3: do not skip the Art Museum. It's not as good as the New York Met, but what is? The Philly Museum is quite good, just in the shadow of a great one.
Tip 4: spend an early morning at the Italian market, just for the experience.
Things to know: there's no contemporary record that the Liberty Bell was rung on July 4th, it was considered so meaningless that it was almost sold for scrap in 1853, and it wasn't till almost 1900 that it got its fame -- yet it's Philly's biggest draw. The story that Betsy Ross stitched the first flag is an obvious hoax, and she never lived in the house with her name.
