Chigirl, sorry if I sounded short in my last reply. I just got blasted on Metromix for the one shrimp truck I missed so the wound is still fresh!

Melissa, no worries! Can't please everyone. I was just curious and hoping it is still there. We filled up our card last visit and have a free plate coming our way for this trip. Romy's is the red shack between Turtle Bay and Kahuku. Thanks for all you do!!!

Nice article Melissa! I am always wondering where these shrimp trucks get their shrimp? Do they still serve fresh Hawaiian shrimp or is it frozen from the grocery store? I chuckled at Fume's sign 'live shrimp for sale cooked'.

Most of the ones we tried were fresh shrimp, with the exception of the Shrimp Shack in Punaluu. That was obviously frozen. And a lot smaller than the others!

Melissa- Thanks to your efforts, I went to the place on Keeaumoku with the thatched umbrellas. I had the spicy shrimp and it was terrific. And THE PRICE WAS EVEN BETTER... currently $6.00 for any plate! What a deal.

When I mentioned that I saw their review on metromix, the young guy was pretty excited. They even tossed in a couple of "sample" mandoo.

Only problem was that I walked the plate back to my office, and everyone was so jealous. (or maybe overcome with garlic, but I prefer to think they were jealous!)

Man oh man! I didn't get any free mandoo. Now you know that, if anyone accuses me of getting special treatment, it's just not true!! ha ha

That place is a good deal even without the $6 special. If I had bought the same plate at the mall, it would have cost $9.75.

Melissa, I was recently on Kauai and had the most wonderful Banana Cream Pie at Polynesia Cafe in the Ching Young Shopping Center (I even started a thread on it, just click on my name). We only had it once so my memory is foggy but I would love to be able to make this pie. It had a coconut macadamia crust (we think cookie crust rather than pastry), a meringue top, and what is in between is in question - maybe haupia, definitely bananas, pudding or custard. This pie is to DIE for. Got anything like that on Ohau? Got a recipe? Thanks.

Mandoo are Korean dumplings, served either steamed, boiled or fried. Fillings can vary, but usually pork, cabbage, bean sprouts, green onions, etc.

iamq I think we ordered mandoo when you visited us last time! We ate it at Sorabol.

Ronda, I'll ask my friend...he's the pastry chef at Longhi's. His blog is at

U have now gotten free mandoo! FYI Mr. Mandoo across Piikoi from Ala Moana Center sells giant steamed-bun Korean mandoo for $3 apiece. Big as your hand, w/ 4 different fillings. Excellent w/ beer, red wine or iced coffee!

OK.....so if you want to see REAL hidden Hawaii, here are some unusual eateries:
http://honolulu.metromix.com/restaur...446617/content

These places are so hidden, I didn't even know about them till I started researching--and I've lived here all my life. There are actually more places, but were difficult for me to access due to parking issues or unfriendly owners. ha.

Uh oh MelissaHI, lots of people will not be happy you mentioned the Kahai Street Kitchen. Crowded enough as it is.

Haven't been to the Board of Water Supply Cafeteria for years, but I'm glad to see the food looks good. Will have to keep it in mind when I'm in town around lunch time. Agree about the parking issue with many of these kind of places, sometimes you just have to luck out or have lots of patience.

Great article and pictures!
