Do you ever wonder where the locals eat in Honolulu? Here's where....
I know I haven't been around for a while, but am going to try to love the forum format and get back into it. I wanted to share a few links with you Hawaii fanatics who come here to eat!
Metromix.com in Honolulu recently launched a series called "Top 10." Each week, a local foodie will share their top 10 places on Oahu in a photo essay. For those of you who enjoy going off the beaten path, this is for you! The first one featured my friend Ed, who is the pastry chef at Longhi's: http://tinyurl.com/nctrnlbst The next one was mine: http://tinyurl.com/mymmxtop10 Finally, I'd like to show you a video blog from Chef Mark Tafoya of New York, whom I took on an intense whirlwind tour in Honolulu recently. He's been uploading his Quick Bites series on Hawaii every few weeks, and last night uploaded his "Honolulu Eating Tour Parts 1&2" http://bit.ly/1aDA6N Enjoy! I hope this helps you in your planning your next trip to Honolulu. |
Great articles Melissa! The photos make me drool. I've been wanting to return to Hawaii over the next few years. Maybe it will be next year! I bookmarked the article on your top 10.

Thanks for sharing, Mel. We'll be back in HNL in September. Good to see the Noodle place as well as Side Street Inn! Both are great local places.
See you in Sept. Carol |
Thanks! I Love Sushi looks fabulous. It's hard to get decent sushi here in Switzerland, I'm very jealous!
|
This is GREAT Melissa! Thanks so much!!!
|
Thanks Mels. Side Street Inn looks great.

Thanks Melissa. We ate at Little Village almost two years ago and have been craving the food ever since. We just got back from Maui and now I'm kicking myself for not stopping over in Honolulu.

thanks for the kind words! and wtm003....you SEE....NEVER skip Honolulu! It's an eater's paradise!!

My shave ice gallery is finally up! One of my friends--transplanted from New York--asked, "Isn't shave ice all the same?" I went on a quest all over Oahu and I can tell you...it's not!

Wow, tough job, but somebody's got to do it! Great report and pictures, perfect for summer.
Have you tried the place on 10th Avenue that was written up in the Advertiser a couple of weeks age? They also serve bbq rice bowls as well as shave ice, etc. Can't think of the name at the moment. Be sure to post if you do try it. |
Of course I meant, "a couple of weeks ago". Sorry, still working my first cup of coffee.
|
Curiousgeo, I know which story you mention...Martha Cheng wrote it.
http://honolulu.metromix.com/restaur...274231/content I decided not to include Your Kitchen in my gallery because it serves other foods and isn't focused on shave ice. I also wanted to focus on the places that are well-known for their shave ice (more so the ones that tourists wouldn't know about). I'm SO dying to try Your Kitchen, though! I was supposed to do that restaurant review, but got too busy so the assignment went to Martha. :( Where's your favorite shave ice? |
MelissaHI, my favorite would be Matsumoto's. I still remember going there from small kid time, before the long lines. Second would be the School Street stand. Do you remember the grumpy old lady? She was so cool, part of the atmosphere of the store.
|
hmmm whenever I went to the one on School Street (then called B&S Store), there was an old man. Now it's Shimazu Store and I loooove their flavors! That's the shave ice I grew up with. I actually went to Maemae School but had never tried John's store....that was where all the cool kids went after school!

Melissa, you always give great info! We will be returning to Oahu for our 6th annual trip and we are always looking for new things. Plenty to try. Side Street has been on the list for the last few years. Perhaps this year. So much good food, so little time! When staying on the North Shore we like Romy's and I was surprised it wasn't part of your shrimpventure! Is it still there? Glad to hear about Macky's, we have thought about stopping and now we have to. Lemon pepper shrimp, yum!
|
Thanks Melissa. I feel like driving to the North Shore so I can try Macky.
|
To be honest, it was raining--POURING--that day and I had no idea where Romy's was. I'm sorry if I missed your shrimp truck....
