If I'm driving, I bring my own. If I'm not, I put up with whatever the hotel has. Unfortunately, hotel pillows rarely work for me. I end up with a stiff neck and a bad night's sleep.

I always take my pillow if it will fit in the case. And after reading another thread about hotel room glasses being cleaned with the bathroom towel, I am beginning to wish I was a tortoise - carry the whole darn lot gt;

Whether I fly or drive, I have to have my pillow. First, it's down filled, and you can't find too many of those in hotels. Second, who knows whose been sleeping on the pillow the hotel gives you, and I doubt they wash the pillows. Not that I'm nuts about germs or anything, since I can't imagine hotels cleaning the bed covers each time. It's mostly a matter of comfort. And, yes, you have to bring a pillowcase that doesn't blend, otherwise it will be lost.

I take my own pillow too.

It's a king size down pillow, which sounds big, but I roll it up really tightly (about 6 inches in diameter)so it takes up hardly any space.

I’m surprised and relieved to learn I am not the only pillow packer! I’m a regular contributor to Travel Talk and a freelance writer who thinks there’s a story here. If you are a pillow packer (or not) and would like to be quoted, please contact me at [email protected]. I’ll send you a clipping if the article is published. Thank you.

Another attempt to encourage my fellow pillow packers to come forward! Thanks.

I've packed my pillow for years (and everyone who travels with me makes fun of me------but the therapist is helping me deal with that) A few years ago I had driven to a convention, so I had plenty of room in the car for a few comforts from home. I'm guessing I looked very "big city" as I rolled my luggage across the beautifully polished marble floors, and under the glistening crystal chandeliers. Draped over my luggage was my bright a la 1970s orange and yellow afghan that my Grandma had crocheted for me, as well as my big squishy pillow with the rainbow pillow case. (yes....the dueling banjo music was swelling).

Yes, of course! I bring my little bean filled pillow. So handy for covering one's ears, eyes, etc., and fits around neck on airplanes to balance the head, and doesn't take up much room. I can't live without it.

The recommendation to take a brightly colored pillowcase a good one for not forgetting your pillow in a hotel and it also ensures that you'll get to take your own pillowcase home with you. We stayed in a condo that had daily maid service and the maid changed the sheets and took our white pillow cases and left us with the off white condo pillow cases. What to do upon checkout when we couldn't find our original pillow cases? It's not like they could understand us when we tried to explain the problem. At home these pillow cases match nothing and they're rough. ; )

Re: colored cases to keep from losing your pillow~
While staying in a lovely hotel in Montreal, I threw my nightgown on the bed and left it there.
That evening, I could not find it anywhere, it had gotten taken to the laundry with the sheets!
After I called the desk about it, they figured things out, and an hour later, a freshly washed and ironed nightgown was returned to me

I sleep with a down pillow at home. When sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, I purchased a travel-size down pillow some years ago that compacts to a very small size--leave the full-size pillow at home. I find I can fall asleep quickly and stay asleep with a familiar-feeling pillow, no matter the size or quality of the bed. If I'm only heading away for an weekend, the pillow is packed only if there's room.
