Do these travel forums interfere with work?
Just reading a post and they mentioned being bored at work. Just wondered how many people are at work when they are on this site and do the ones with supervisors watching them ever get told off???
Everyone is at work, just not working, Fodor's is more fun. Bored, you can do it, just watch for you supervisor and don't get caught. I've been on Fodor's for weeks and still get my work done.
I am one of those bored at work people. Just posted on another thread about how I am on a conference call right now which is very boring so I am multitasking and surfing Fodor's as well.

In answer to your question, I don't really have a supervisor, I am an attorney so unless you count th esenior partner in my office . . . I really don't "report" to anyone. I do not have a 9-5 type job. I am required to "bill" 9 hours a day. If I spend 11 hours at the office to bill that 9 hours (which is pretty normal considering one of those 11 hours is my lunch hour) that is my business, I can do whatever I want. BTW as I am on conference call whith 2 other attorneys discussing "strategy" I am considered to be "billing" this time even though I am posting!

Last Friday one of our employees was fired from her position because she was on Fodor's. She had been verbally warned three times and received a written warning once and still was caught on Fodor's. Now that she is gone, I can stop watching her and get more time on Fodor's myself, only I won't get fired.
Ah, Supervisor, when wasn't it this way! Way to go - you've got her out of there, now you're free to join us. Welcome, indeed. She's probably in the bread line now.
Supervisor,
You crack me up. I am the boss in my office and I just fired my manager's assistant for too many personal e-mails and phone calls.
and that's why VP is as high as you're going - until you get focused on the big picture and stop terrorizing the small fry who work under you. Best to keep the tyrants who fire out of upper management, especially when they gloat on fodors. asshole manager of the year was just awarded - tough luck. What a nominee you'd have made. Better luck next year, if your employees let you live.
I'm too busy helping VPs cook the books so I don't get to post here often. Be back soon.
Last Thursday I walked into my co-worker's office to find a picture of a nude woman w/an aroused horse on his computer screen. Did he ever scramble to get rid of the screen, finally turning off his hard drive. When I told him never did I want to see anything like that again, he said he had brought the disc from home. Of course he apologized.
Now, do you think that's worse than me being on Fodors right now, or what???
I still haven't made up my mind about what to do about the pervert next door. What would you do?
Surprised,
I'd mine your own business and keep it quiet. He can do what he wants with his time, whether it's surfing Fodors, or watching horses.....it's nunyabidness.
I can't imagine having enough time at work to sit around surfing. Wish I had the time some people here have!
Jason, you could not be more wrong. Time you spend at work is company time, and you're on company equipment. Most people are under the sad delusion that they have a right to privacy while at work and on the net-- wrong. Employees should have NO expectation of privacy while they are on the internet at the office. People are being fired every day from corporations for looking at porn and sending inappropriate emails. Have seen it firsthand, many times. Words to the wise: be careful. Big Brother is most definitely watching you.
Actually surprised a guy in my company was surfing porn sites and he got fired. I would turn his ass in. Anyone that perverted is probably one step away from the looney bin....
Do these forums interfere with work? Absolutely not! Nurse, scalpel, please...and put this keyboard right next to the patient's gallbladder.
Oh, nope, give the scare crap a rest, will ya. Nobody can be watching! And anyway, we do have a right to some privacy while we're posting, whether in the office or at home. Doesn't matter whose time it's on. You're apparently not an attorney, are you!
Actually I would say work interferes with travel forums. Like the lawyer, I've been posting while on conference calls.
Frt, you go on living in your dream world and surf those hot horny teen websites 9 to 5, by all means. Then, when your HR catches up to you and fires your lazy ass, don't come crying like a little girl. YOu obviously need to bone up on your company policy manual. Any big corporation will most definitely have stated policies about what employees can and cannot do on company time on the net. And porn surfing while at work DOES constitute sexual harrassment at a lot of places. But you go on and do what you want, you're obviously fodder for the unemployment line anyway.
Dear Surprised, You walked in to see a co worker looking at a pic of a naked woman and an "aroused horse" on his computer. I believe that would be sexual harassment according to the definition of sexual harassment at my workplace. As for the poster who said to mind your own business, well, it is your business. You shouldn't have to be subjected to such things in the workplace. What would I do about it? Personally I would ignore it the first time.
you may be right, nope, but to be frank, nobody in our HR ever says a thing about surfing policy. we're independent contractors, we're pretty much seperate, and if there's some overall policy, it sure beats me. our HR people are sleezes anyway, and some actually have to share a cubicul and a screen. cant imagine them doing anything to watch us post. how come youre so excited about this stuff anyway, sounds to me maybe your company has a bigger problem than ours.
My supervisor is out golfing today, no doubt with other supervisors who couldn't tell you the difference between a firewall and a niblick.

If your work output or quality suffers from Fodormania, it's too much. If it doesn't, and you're not on piecework, or you don't answer to the guy with pointy hair, let your conscience and your bandwidth be your guide. I personally find Fodors keeps me sharp, and provides enough laughs to raise my spirit from time to time, despite work which sometimes is a downer.

Don't forget, though, that Fodors probably can see your IPA, so if you threaten someone or break the law (including libel) your place of work might get a call from someone with a badge.
Whooo,
It was the second time. First time was just 2 nude women and I pretended I didn't see anything.
This was a few months ago.
So, I'm figuring three strikes, and you are out. That is, one more time, and I'll squeal to the boss. This guy is walking on thin ice anyway.
Hey surfer fans. Your boss does have the right and ability to check what web sites you have been visiting on company time and equipment and to fire you...if it has a written policy about computer usage. The Wall Street Journal issued a warning or two about personal use of its computers, then did a check of usage, and ended up firing a number of employees. A former employer of mine fired a colleague because she was using the computer to look up wedding-planning sites.
Better check your company's employee handbook!!!
No, not since I was fired for spending too much time here. Now I have all day to surf on Fodors. Of course, my internet access will be cut off soon and the library only let's me use the computer for an hour at a time. That's when I'll really be in trouble...
Because job security is so scarce these days, big brother IS watching, being homeless & unemployed is not very appealing, you better believe I don't care how bored I was at work I WILL find something to do job wise rather than risk getting a pink slip for probing on the internet. You want privacy & do your own thing, GO HOME!!
JETSONNNNNN, YOUR FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to the top
Surfing at work on company time is the same thing as stealing. And companies can and do monitor their employees. Think what you post on a work computer is anonymous--think again....
SURE!!!!!!!!!
I have a hand-held pc from work. Not supposed to use it for anything else (not on it now, i'm on my own PC at home)but wondered this.

If I DO use my hand held by plugging it into a data port, (either home or in a business center, hotel room etc) but don't 'connect' (send data thru the phone line) with company, but delete history before I connect, can they possibly know I'm using it for anything else?

In other words, is everything recorded on the hard drive, even if I erase history before I connect by phone line?

Hope this makes sense. ?? Does anyone know for sure? Thanks!
mimi me --

Presumably your handheld accepts cookies. If it does, anyone who could get into your PC could check your cookie history (some of which does not appear in the file called "cookies" but elsewhere) and easily find out you'd been to Fodor's. However, they would have to be looking for it.

Do you work for this sort of Gestapo -- as many do -- or are they trusting?

As to whether people in general get monitored or not -- 'fraid a lot of places DO monitor staff use of computer/internet, which is disturbing. But they have to because of the children who have to get their time on porn sites or who spend all morning picking fights on Fodors or who play on-line games compulsively -- all of which is ALSO disturbing.

Is there anyway I can cover my tracks at work, so they will not see the internet sites I am visiting. (Yes, my computer is on a network in a two hundred person company).

In the slowing economy I want to stay employed but enjoy web surfing during the work day to make the 8 hours go faster.
Sorry Jerry no way to cover your tracks if you are on a company computer and a lot of company's now have spyware. I would curtail your surfing habits to your lunch break...
Work is NOT supposed to be fun people!! Where did the notion ever come from that you had to be entertained at work??? Work is supposed to be boring. You are there to do a job, not surf the net for your own amusement. No wonder the productivity in this country is low. Too many slackers trying to get out of an honest days work.
I only surf during my lunch hour - I don't see anything wrong with that.

The folks in our computer department are able to check how much time people are logged on for, and what sites they are visiting. They only do this (as far as I know) at the request of a supervisor, when someone's being a real slacker. Usually that person gets fired, then the rest of us find out that they've been surfing 5 hours a day, mostly on the NASCAR site, or whatever. Usually after a firing, everyone stays off the net for awhile!
To the poster regarding my hand held:

Thank you. I'm still a bit confused, though. My handheld is always with me, as a technical analyst (not computers, obviously). I do not go to an office but do CONNECT to a data base of sorts.

So then, since no one can literally sit down with my hand held, can the data base people still see what else I've done on my handheld?

Hope that makes sense. And thanks again.
Surprised--I'd be more concerned about:
#1 How YOU knew the horse was aroused and,
#2 Why are you still thinking about it.
Then again, anyone who likes porn is a major sicko!
After reading these postings I did some research on the internet about the topic and found out there are software packages that even dummies can use that will show every page (from the internet) that was shown on the individual computer. Great for finding out what your spouse, roommate and kids are doing on the computer.

Also there is software that will delete all the cookies and traces of your internet use. Though I doubt this would work on an office computer.
My job duties consist soley of taking incoming calls. When I am waiting for a call to come in I can go on any web site to whichI have been given access. This is an approved site to surf, as long as I watch my language. I am still fullfilling all of my job duties.

Gramps. You have led a sad life haven't you? Many people have jobs they love.
