Regarding your trip-stay on Miami beach itself. It is totally separate from Miami. Miami is really not that great. Also, there are MANY neighborhoods in Miami where you could get seriously hurt or worse. Avoid it!
Now, Miami Beach is great! It is safe and the transportation is fine for what you will be doing. There is a city bus called the "S" Bus that will take you right down Collins to South Beach and will take you to a nice mall called Aventura Mall-worth going to. South Beach is to the south of Bal Harbour and Aventura to the north. All the mentioned areas are very nice and safe. South Beach is the main part of Miami Beach and runs 20-25 blocks and several avenues. The beaches all along Miami Beach are great. You will love it. Stay out of Miami- it sucks! AS far as transportation from the airport-I use South Beach Shuttle which was quite good. Call info. on the number. Good luck.

Do you need to rent a car in Miami? No. Should you? Probably yes. For what it will cost you to take a cab to and from the airport you could probable rent a small car and then have the flexibility that a car will give you vs.the bus. It's nice to go to South Beach in the morning, for lunch or dinner. It's nice to go to Bayside and take a harbour cruise. It's nice to go to Cocanut Grove if you feel like it. Most likely you'll enjoy the convenience of having a car. But no, you don't need to rent a car. By the way, when you go to Bal Harbour go upstairs to the 2nd level for lunch. There are some nice restaurants there that are less expensive than the ones on the main floor and are very good.

I too an staying at the Beach House at Bal Harbour in Miami Beach. I wasn't sure whether or not to rent a car, and based on the info in this discussion, it's not a necessity unless you plan on going into South Beach or exploring other areas during the evenings. If you are planning on limiting travel to day trips to South Beach, then maybe it's not necessary. As an added data point for you to consider, I just visited Enterprise rental's web site. They are offering rates as low as $9.99 from Friday to Monday, and there is an Enterprise about 5 miles from the Beach House Bal Harbour. With taxes for 3 days for example, the total came to $40. For me, it's a no brainer. I would rather have the freedom to explore while I'm there and / or avoid paying for taxis which can end up being pricy. I may get there and end up cancelling it, but at least I have the reservation. Just an option you may want to consider. Good luck!

yes, it's a good idea to rent a car in Miami Beach. The parking is not that terrible.
