Do i need to pick up my bags changing flights in hawaii?
going to Hawaii in May, and had a question. We're flying from Atlanta, through SLC on delta to Maui. I need to then catch an interisland to Kona that same night on Island Air or Northwest.
Will i need to pick up my bags and cehck them back in at the Island Air counter or will Delta check them all the way through, and i can go right from gate to gate? (i assume i need to tell them where my final destination is when i leave Atlanta)
thanks

You should be able to check your bags all the way through provided you have an acceptable amount of time between flights. Call Delta and ask what their minimum time requirement is for this change. Make sure and tell Delta the airport and new airline you will be catching.

Well, i called Delta again. They told me to call the other airline. The other airline (island air) said that as long as i tell Delta at checkin, they should check the bags all the way through.
Just this past xmas, i travelled with delta to San Juan, then with Carribean Sun airlines to Antigua, and Delta check my bags all the way through (i don't see Carribean listed on their partner list).
Confusion reigns! Problem is, if i miss that flight because of having to pick up my bags, that is the last flight with that airline that day. The next one is ith a different airline, so i'd be ska-rewed.

In Spring 2004, I booked two separate flights: Hawaii to SFO on United, then SFO to London on British Airways. When I got to HNL, the ticket agent informed me that she would check my bags all the way through. When I got to SFO, I double checked with BA to make sure they got my bags, and they even took an extra step to check with ME at the gate! My bags went thru with no problem.
The next day, my travel companion did the same thing. However, I have a feeling she didn't do any double checking at SFO. When she arrived in London, she was told that there was "no guarantee" that her bags would be there. Sure enough, her luggage was lost for 3 days.
I'm telling you this not to scare you, just to tell you that as long as you check, you should be OK! I've flown on other domestic trips that connected to a non-partner airline, and never had a problem.

Doesn't matter if airlines are partners or not. Most airlines have interline baggage agreement. If they do, they can check the bags through. Just tell the check-in person at Atlanta about your second flight. Make sure the tag is going to KOA.
The check-in agent will need to see your confirmation, and may have to call or look up. So it'll take some time. Ask for a supervisor if he/she doesn't know what to do.
