Do I need a car in Savannah?
 

Traveling to Savannah for a long weekend the end of March (arr. Thurs. lv. Sun.) and wondering if we should rent a car at the airport. Any thoughts on whether we should have one to see the sights, go to restaurants etc.?

A car is not an absolute must. However, you might find that it adds to your trip, especially if the weather is not the best. If the weather is great and you like to walk, you won't need one. A riding tour, with on/off privileges, will show you most of the interesting places in the Historic District. I am assuming that you will be staying within the Historic District. If so, you will be well within walking district of just about everything there.

A car comes in handy only if you have time to go out to places like Fort Pulaski, Wormsloe, Isle of Hope and Bonaventure Cemetary. You won't even need one to get to most of the restaurants.

I always have a car when visiting Savannah, but it's really not necessary if you are content to walk or hop on the trolley to get around in old town. And if this is your first visit to Savannah, you won't run out of things to see and do there!

We were in Savannah for a several days a couple of years ago and rented a car. During the day, we walked everywhere, and even a couple of evenings, we walked to dinner. But we were glad we had a vehicle on the night we went to Elizabeth's -- as I recall, it was pretty far from where we were staying (The Zeigler House), and not in the nicest area. We also went to Tybee, Bonaventure, and Fort Pulaski. I don't recall parking being a problem anywhere, and since it was just the two of us, we just rented the smallest (read: cheapest) thing we could! I'd recommend it, personally; but not absolute necessary, as others have said.

We just came back from Savannah and had rented a car. Parking at the Hyatt cost $17 a day (in/out valet parking which was convenient), and there was very limited street parking. If you did find a place, there was a sign saying: "No parking Sunday 1am to 5am for street cleaning" or words to that effect.

We used a car to go out to Tybee, Uncle Bubba's which was 6 miles outside of town, and to one of the restaurants that was several blocks away.

You would have to do the math re limo/taxi to/from airport, etc to see if it is worthwhile. If you are just staying around Savannah proper, I would say no. They have bicycle cabs that will take you around the city -- they work for tips only - slow but convenient. ((b))
