Do Atlanta Taxi's Accept Credit Cards?

That's my question. Next week I will take a taxi from the airport to a downtown hotel and I want to know if I will need to pay in cash, or if I can use a credit card?

I don't know but I wouldn't count on it.

I'd take MARTA.

I took a taxi from a hotel in Buckhead (is that the right description, starrs?) to the airport, it was only about $25.00 plus tip. I didn't ask if they accepted credit cards or not, happy.

Not sure about Atlanta, but in other places where credit cards are theoretically accepted, drivers really try to talk you into using cash. If they don't have wireless electronic card readers, they hate taking the time to write out a charge slip. And the credit card's percentage eats into their tips. Have cash with you just in case.

I prefer using a credit card while traveling as it is a convenient way to keep a record of travel expenses.

Seattle taxis accept credit cards and, and on a recent visit to New York City, I was glad to find credit card machines in the back seats of all the taxis I took.

I haven't been in an Atlanta cab in a while, but I'd be surprised if they'd gotten that far. I remember a couple (few?) years ago when the city had to fight a big battle against the cab companies just to regulate that cabs be no more than 10 years old.

Atlanta is not a taxi city. You can get one at the airport and there's a line waiting at hotels. But, I've never seen anyone hailing a cab/taxi in Atlanta.

It was a pretty big deal (and recently) that NYC taxis all were equipped for credit cards. Based on the NYC/Atlanta comparison, I'll predict 25 years before taxis in Atlanta are required to have cc access.

I'm not going to say "no" because it's hard to make a blanket statement like that. You MAY cross paths with a taxi in Atlanta that will take a cc. But, I doubt you'll see them in all the taxis you take. How 'bout taking enough money to use in case they don't and then using a cc if they do. ;)

Ditto for Savannah.

Thanks. We took the train to our downtown hotel, stayed two nights, picked up our car from a downtown location and dropped it off at ATL on our return. It worked out perfectly.

Checker Cabs will be the first.
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/finan.../D9IM96700.htm

They are in the process of installing the machines in their 200 cabs. They represent 12.5% of Atlanta cabs. Maybe the other companies will follow suit soon.

They do accept credits cards. But it also depends on which credit card you are carrying because they accept Visa, Master Card , American Express and Discover Novas only.. If you do not have one of these cards then you need to carry cash.
