Distance between Skagway and Whitehorse
 

Will be travelling to Skagway in late July will have 10 hours. Is this enough time to travel to Whitehorse? What are the road conditions and is this a scenic route.<BR>

How are you getting to Skagway?

We will be renting a car from Skagway to Whitehorse...

Was going to post a question but might as well jump into this thread. We have a car booked for our day in Skagway. 7 am - 11 pm.

Would appreciate any specific information on where to go. Part of the group are planning to take the train up to Fraser and I would pick them up there. I gather from a post on another board that Emerald Lake is a destination. Also what is the best source of a local map. The AAA map lacks detail!!

Basically, there's only one route. You don't have to really worry about making a wrong turn. Skagway is very scenic, so it the road out. Beautiful mountain vistas, lots of them. The road was fine. Not much traffic in late July two years ago. Fireweed will be in bloom. We traveled from Skagway to Tok to Wasilla. Get the Milepost at your local bookstore. It will list anything along the way. The lakes are very unusual looking due to the color. We spent two nights in Skagway and made advance reservations on the train. Do some advance reading about the Chilkhoot trail to get an appreciation of the area. You can get more visitor information via the links on the Anchorage Daily News website www.adn.com.

We will be on a cruise and have also rented a car for the one day we'll be in Skagway.

The Klondike Highway is a well maintained 2 land paved road. 125 miles to Whitehorse with a significant scenery drop off after Emerald Lake 75 miles. One highpoint of Whitehorse - there is a Harley shop. :) I assume your train passengers are purchasing the one way rail directly from the railroad?? If you are NOT doing any other interior touring- it is NOT necesary to purchase THE MILEPOST, instead, try your library and copy the couple Skagway pages. My perferred rental is AVIS out of Skagway, Sourdough sometimes rents old cars and sometimes has a 100 mile limit on their rentals, verify all terms.
