Disneyland or Universal w/Husband recovering from back surgery?
Will be staying 3 nights along the beach in Hermosa, and need recommendation; whether to go to Disneyland or Universal for a couple of days. My husband will be having back surgery in May, so will need to be careful and not rides that are to vigorous when we vacation in July. Trying to decide which theme park would be best for everyone. We have two boys, ages 18 and 13. They have been to Disneyland and Universal before, quite some time ago. Any suggestions?? Thanks...

My only suggestion is that you forget both Disneyland and Universal. He doesn't need to be rushing his recovery by doing too much walking, etc. Back surgery is not something that you want to risk messing up. May to July is too short a time.

My SIL has back problems and almost all of the rides - except the children's rides are a problem for her. I would agree to focus on other activities. (She even found some of car motions on the Haunted House too much for her - never mind any of the more active rides.)

If the boys have their hearts set on a theme park, my guess is that the beach will not be an acceptable substitute.
You may want to find out which park has shows your husband would like. You and he can see those and do the calmer pursuits (enjoying the gardens, eating ice cream
, etc.) while your sons do the rides together. It's easy now to keep in touch by cellphone. In the olden days when I would take 6 kids (my three and three friends) we would take walkie talkies!
MGM has lots of shows and movie-themed entertainment. The Lion King show at Animal Kingdom is great, and there is a very convincing 3D show at the Magic Kingdom!

I noticed ALOT of people on those motorized scooters at Disney. I think you can rent them at the front gate of all the parks. Maybe rent one of those so that he doesnt strain himself with too much walking.

How extensive is his surgery? The problem is not his walking so much as it is his getting tired. Everyone tends to slump as they tire. He needs to keep his posture as good as possible as he heals.
Also, will he have a brace? If he does and you are planning on traveling in July.....the heat and a brace will be pure heII!

I went to Disneyland about two months after back surgery (laminectomy) and found I could walk forever, but just could not stand for very long.
I was able to get a temporary disability pass from Disneyland which you could use to get to the head of the line. However, I only used it once at California Adventure for that flying over America ride (I forget the name).
I didn't want to go on anything that would ruin my good surgical results.

I would choose Epcot and with a scooter. The "rides" such as the World, The Land, The Sea, etc have zero motion and continual load type lines. There are nicer sit down dining options and air conditioning , and you can make reservations. Some of the 360 movies, such as China and Canada are cool and comfortable and would be enjoyed in a wheel chair.

YIKES...this isn't DisneyWORLD....sorry! My Dad had back probs and surgery and he and my stepmom rode scooters the entire time. At first, they were hesitant, but didn't want to spend all that money and not enjoy several things.

I'd go for Disneyland. It's small enough for your sons to wander around on their own, but meet up with you later.
And there are also rides and things for your husband to enjoy without having to jar his back.
I went to Universal last year for the first time since the late 90s and I was bored out of my mind.

Possibly your older boys would enjoy the California Adventure side of Disneyland which has the Soarin over California ride, as well as the big coaster Screamin and Tower of Terror. If your husband can sit there are a number of auditorium shows (a live musical production of Aladdin) and the Avalon Cove bar is a great place to hang out.
