It has been about four years, but the last time we visited Disneyland we stayed at the Sheraton and really enjoyed it. They have a nice pool and we were able to see a lot of the fireworks from our hotel.
Disneyland and Universal are really quite a distance from each other. We stayed put at the Sheraton and took day trips from there, but you could even consider two locations depending on how much time you plan to spend and what else you might be planning.
There are also the Disneyland hotels themselves to consider. They are convenient, but not cheap.
Hope this helps.

Last year we stayed at the Howard Johnson in Anaheim. We thought it was brilliant for the money. The pool area was lovely, they have a shuttle bus to Disneyland and a great shop onsite to buy breakfast stuff etc.

There are about 150 family friendly hotels/motels near Disneyland. Give us an idea of your budget.
And as the others say - Disneyland is nowhere near Universal. Most days it is a LOT more than 45 minutes from one to the other.

I actually used to work at the Anahiem Fairfield Inn and we were most definitely a family friendly hotel. This hotel is not like typical FFI...it has 467 rooms, restaurant/room service, bellmen, concierge...more like a very upscale Courtyard but reasonable prices. All the rooms have sleeper sofas so if you book a room with 2 doubles, you'd actually have 3 beds...plenty for a family of your size. The hotel is directly across from Disney on Harbor Drive about 1/2 block from the HoJo mentioned above.
There's a tour desk in the hotel lobby that can help you with Universal tix...they have tours that leave from the hotel if you decide not to rent a car.
