Hundreds of thousands flock to Disney World in the summer from Europe and all over the states; they can't all be insane. They are coming when their vacation schedules allow. Since your children are grown you shouldn't have the whining and begging to do certain rides etc.

Many of the attractions at Epcot and MGM are indoors and cool. I do not second the remarks about going back to the parks at 3p.m. as that is about the time for the afternoon storms.

Here is my recommendation: Lay around the resort most mornings, maybe do a park a couple of mornings, especially Animal Kingdom. Do most park functions in the evening to take advantage of the fireworks and special events. Do not miss Pleasure Island and Downtown Disney. We love Wolfgang Pucks cafe and Portobello in that area. Sunday Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues will be a very different thing for an upstate New Yorker. The Adventurers Club is amusing and the Comedy Warehouse better than you might expect.

Try to eat one night at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and watch the animals come to the lodge to feed at dusk. The two restaurants there are exceptional: Boma and Jiko.

It depends how much you want to go to WDW and how heat-tolerant you are. People live in central Florida, and, while indoors is air-conditioned and it is uncomfortable, they still need to go outside sometime and do not all perish every summer.

If you all are motivated to go and realize how to pace yourselves in the heat, go and have fun. If one of you is even ambivalent about it, I fear all you will hear is whining about the heat - even from adult kids.

Mom

Remember 3 words

AL CO HOL

Seriously, it will be fun IF you family is not type A personalities. However, if anyone IS a type A personality then pick a different spot.

Stay on the property. Visit the park in early morning and evening. Make dinner reservations early if going to Epcot.

Finally, please remember Don't Drink and Drive. Drinking and walking is fine. Drinking and staggering is excellent. Drinking and driving sucks.

WE have been to WDW and Universal Parks a couple times in July. Yes, it's hot, but we have gone back again. With your children being older, you might want to consider going to Universal Orlando. They would LOVE the Hard Rock Hotel. The parks are within a five minute walk from the hotel and are smaller than Disney. Getting around is MUCH, MUCH easier and the parks are FANTASTIC!
Which ever parks you do, just go early, take an afternoon break at the pool and go back to the parks at night. The good thing about July is the parks are all open late.
For LOADS of info on the Orlando parks and hotels, go to www.disboards.com

The earlier poster's statement regarding early entry is incorrect. The early enty was reinstated a few months ago. For the most accurate (and somewhat obessive info regarding WDW go to wdwinfo.com or wdwig.com)

I'm from Boston and have been there in late June. I didn't find the humidity all that unbearable. Granted July will be different but NY and Mass get their share of hot humid days in July too.

I would say that we northerns would probably appreciate the warm weather that Florida in March or April offers over the heat of July. And another downside is the crowds of July. Again the reported crowds in late June were not a problem when we were there. We had Epcot to ourselves one day (or so it seemed.)

But WDW is a fun destination for most people who aren't completely jaded.

Another reason I am glad to be from the South: the summer heat doesn't really phase me. I mean, of course we bitch and say "Its hot" but it never keeps me indoors if I want to be outside and DEFINITELY would not keep from going on a particular vacation.

And it gets cold in the South too, so I'm pretty used to almost any sort of weather. I say, come down and enjoy the heat and go to WDW. Think of it as a free sauna! People pay to sweat, but Florida gives it to you for free!!

Yes, you are insane to even consider it!!

I moved here (from the Philadelphia area) last year and love Florida however, the summer is brutal unless you are in the water somewhere (pool, ocean, your bathtub ) or in an air conditioned place.

We have season's passes to Disney (orlando) and don't go near the place from May til about the end of September because of the heat and humidity. You only wind up worrying about how much soda or water you have left and where the next drink will come from ? Don't do it.

I worked for Disney's College Program a few summers ago and I have to say that I personally would avoid going between Memorial Day and Labor Day at all costs. And I hate to say it but July is SO CROWDED! There are tour groups from all over the world there at that time and it is SOOO HOT! That said, you could still go but give yourself enough time to do the things that you want to do. Make sure that you take into account the long lines. Also, the summer is a very good time to take advantage of Disney's show packages if you have the bedget for it. Example: Disney offers a Fantasmic dinner package that gives you a choice between a couple of the sit down restaurants in the park and then you get guaranteed entrance into Fantasmic. The seats aren't the best in the house but it's WAY better than waiting in line for hours and hours. Fast Pass will help you a lot too, that way you can avoid the lines at some of the more popular attractions. Definitely stay on property if you can afford it. Also, if you can afford it you will be so much better off staying at a delux resort. The pool will be nicer, the staff will be nicer and your rooms will be nicer. I worked at a lifeguard at the All-Star Resort and I can tell you the the pools are so crowded and hot there in the summer that it's not worth it to go.
So, if you've got your heart set on Disney and July is the only time that you can go, by all means go. The trip will be fun if you have a fun and relaxed attitude.
