Recommendations for hotels in downtown Charleston,SC

My husband and I are thinking of retiring one day to Charleston and are planning a trip this month for a visit. We want to stay in the downtown historical area and prefer a Marriott hotel. I think the one that is in that location is sold out. Anyone have any experience with the Court by Marriott that is on the Ashley River? It says it is a mile and a half from the historical area - too far to walk I guess? Any other suggestions for hotels?

We stayed at the Planters Inn - perfect location on Market Street right in the heart of the Historic District - you can walk to "everything". Definitely stay here if you can afford it.

If you stay across the river what hotels have water taxis?

I missed this somehow.

I live in Mt Pleasant. There are tons of waterfront communities. Do you want ocean, marsh, or river?

The Historic Foundation is conducting the Home and Garden tours now. Spring is always a busy time in Charleston.

Put your dates into kayak.com and see what you get. The walk between Marriott on the Ashley and the HD is not something you'll enjoy.

Hotels don't have water taxis. TThe tour boat that goes to Ft. Sumter also goes to Patriot's Point in Mt Pleasant but that's it.

We would probably want river front since we would like to keep our boat at our house. I hear lots of nice things about Mt. Pleasant!

Mt Pleasant is very nice. But unless you have lots of money, if you want waterfront you'll likely have to look at Rivertowne or Dunes West. They're nice enough but the traffic out there is awful.

Have you googled riverfront property in Charleston?

The Cooper River Bridge Run is the last weekend of March. Everything will be sold out. I really like the Double Tree that is downtown as well as the Francis Marion hotel.
