Discounted Subway Fare In NYC for seniors
My wife and I will be traveling to NYC for 8 days and we would like to purchase a 7 days subway pass. As seniors, would we be entitled to a discount for this pass?

They used to offer that, but not any longer. The only way to get discounted senior tickets is to get a special MTA reduced fare card with your picture on it. You can do this in person or by mail. Here's a link to more specific information. It's worth doing if you get to NYC from time to time.

When are you coming? You might have time to apply for a regular reduced fare pass by mail. Otherwise, you can go directly to the office and apply in person when you get here.
I think the senior fare is less than half the regular fare, so it would pay to get the regular senior pass.
I'm not sure, but I think the 7 day subway pass may already be discounted, and I don't think you'd be entitled to a further discount.

Yes, there's a discount for senior citizens but as NeoPatrick noted it's only with the personalized photo identified reduced fare card. The senior 7 day pass is exactly half the regular pass price. Whatver you load onto the special MetroCard will allow you to pay half the fare (both for individual rides and the unlimited weekly or Monthly)
If you don't get the card, you can pay half fare on the bus(actually a little less, since they round it down) by paying cash (coins only). Technically you need to show ID with your birthdate or a Medicare card.
For individual subway rides (not a weekly pass), if you can find an attendant at a "token booth", pay the full fare in cash and you'll get a paper pass good for a "free" return trip

Despite what the website says, before I got my senior ID card, I went to an agent at a booth and tried to get a half price fare with my medicare card. I was told that is no longer possible, but to get a reduced fare you MUST have the special card. I don't know if that was just his decision or if that is really the policy, but you are at their mercy in any case.
