What are fodorites experiences with priceline or quickbook or other similar groups? has anyone had a bad experience? Are your chances of getting a good deal better if you book in advance or at the last minute?

I've used a number of different ones and had very good luck with all. The only time I had a problem was when I had a flight canceled due to weather and my room was booked via Priceline. I have not found one to be better than all the others. As with most things, it pays to shop around.

I booked a hotel with Quikbook last year and when I called the hotel to confirm, they had the wrong date. The date had already passed, and they were going to charge me for not showing up! I called Quikbook and they spoke to the hotel and cleared it up eventually, but it is important to check with the hotel directly after booking through an outside agency.

I booked two hotels in Florida through hoteldiscount.com in March and had no problems with them. I actually used the website to do the research then called the phone number and spoke with a really nice guy, so it's cool you have the option to reach an actual person. I didn't have any problem with either reservation, and you absolutely must verify the reservation with the hotel itself!

Regarding booking in advance vs. last minute...in the week we took to decide on our plans and the two weeks after we made them, I watched the rate for the hotel I wanted go from $109 to $119 to $129! I also saw the other hotel we booked go up incrementally about $40 between November (when we booked) and March (when we traveled).

I have had great luck with Priceline booking a hotel in Philadelpia. I got the Crowne Plaza for $50. Not a bad deal.

Haven't had any problems with Quikbook, though I've seen their prices inching up as the date draws nearer.

I like hotwire and find it easy to use, but you don't know the hotel until you book it, you only know the rating (3stars, 4stars etc)
