Directions to Staten Island Ferry, NYC, please.
 

Hello, We'll be staying in a hotel in Times Square and I'd like directions by subway to board the Staten Island Ferry. We are using it just as a tourist ride. Any special directions on boarding, area to sit, etc.? Do we need to disembark before returning? How much time should we alot for this venture. We're short on time with this visit. Feedback would be welcomed. Also, we're going in mid-December and plan this event for a Monday or Tuesday...day?...evening?

JJ,<BR>I don't know the subway that goes to the SI ferry. But when you get there, you should sit on the right side so you could see the Statue of Liberty. I don't think you have to get off the boat in SI. On the way back to Manhattan, sit on the left side so you can see the SOL again. My recommendation is that you go around 4:30, that way on the way back, you will be able to see the lights of the city coming on. Round trip takes about one hour and the ferry is <BR>FREE.

The closest subway, the '1' train, is out of commission because of 9/11. From times square take the 'R' train to Whitehall Street, which is the last stop in Manhattan, and you will be a block north of the ferry terminal. Or you can take the '7' train to Grand Central and then take the '4' or '5' downtown to Bowling Green.

JJ:<BR>You do not have to get off the Ferry in SI, just stay right where you are. If the boat is being put up for the day, an announcement will be made and there will be another boat for you to take. If it is a glorious day (which we have had many of those lately) stand outside. You are free to move about so please do. Steve's directions are right on the money. Go in the evening...just lovely...Remember that from about 4:30 until 6:30 PM on weekdays you will be with the commuters and the boats are very crowded. Have a great trip to NY!
