Direction assistance please: Central PA to Albany, NY

Greetings all,

Making a trip to Rexford, NY, this weekend and have been given two set of directions. We've never been to this area and would like to see which you all would prefer.

First set:
I-81 N
Merge onto I-78
Merge onto I-287 N
Merge onto I-87 N
(Take 1N toward airport/Montreal exit)
Take the GROOMS RD exit- EXIT 8A.

Second set:
Take 81 north
Take 88 north (or east)
Take 90 south (or east)
Take 87 north
Take Exit 8A (Grooms Road)

Any assistance is appreciated,
thanks!

Hello,

I would opt for the latter (taking 81 to 88, to 90). It would depend a little on the time of day I was traveling, but traffic along Rtes. 78 and 287 can be quite heavy at times.

(I should add that I grew up right there, in case you're wondering why someone in FL is giving you directions for NJ, and still have family there.)

I totally agree. The second set has much less traffic, and you save a little on tolls.

Thanks for the help.

When getting on 87 from 90, will I head south or north? I would think south (headed to Rexford, by the way), but can't tell for sure by looking at the atlas.

I was also giving directions that said to take 81 to 84 to 87, but it seems like the 81 to 84 connection could be a bit difficult at night for the first time.

Thanks, again!

1. 81N to 88E to 90E to 87N to Exit 8A.

2. If you want to take I-84, the connection is 81N to 380S/84E (just past Scranton) to 84E. They just finished rebuilding that major intersection at 81/380 a few years ago. Good signage and you won't miss it.

From 90 to 87 you will take exit 24 off of the NY State Thruway (which is I90 West of Albany), then after the tolls follow the signs for I87 North, towards Montreal.

If you do not exit the Thruway I90 will turn into I87 South, in the direction of NY.

I would take a modified version of the latter.

Take I-88 to its end, exiting at exit 25 PRIOR to where it joins I-90

Follow Rt 7 east

Rt 7E will merge with I=890W for about 2 miles; exit at Exit #7, sighn will read "Exit 7, Rt 7 TROY"

Continue E on Rt 7 about 1.5 miles, turn L onto Rt 146

Rt 146 will bring you to the main intersection of Rexford at NY Rt 146 and County Rt91, River Road

Warning on above directions: Rt 7 and Rt 146 cross each other twice. The first time will be after about 4 miles; you'll see a Mobil gas station and a Super8; continue straight on Rt 7E at this point. Rt 7 and Rt 146 will intersect again after you've driven on then exited I-890 at Exit #7. BTW, I-88 and Rt 7 also criss cross dozens of times too; stay on I-88 until the last exit, #25

Thanks everyone.

I think the wife wants to take the 81/88/90/87 route, so we'll do that.

She says it'll be a bit shorter than 81/84/87. I trust her much better with maps than I trust myself.

You will also save yourself the NYS Thruway tolls that it will cost between Newburgh and Albany by taking the latter route. My route will save you from driving east to Albany, going north, than driving west to Rexford, but the signage will be easier, I suppose.
