Dinner Reservations a must??

Ok,this may be a stupid question but here goes...we will be in NYC this weekend - 4 people and will be having dinner out Sat nite probably in Murray Hill area and then Sunday nite near the theatre, Astor Place. Are reservations a must? We aren't planning on going to fancy places (or chains)...we would prefer to be a bit more spontaneous but also don't want to wait for 1+hr to eat.

On a Sat. night in Dec. spontaneity can lead to bad food or starving unless you plan on eating very early or very late. What I mean, the most popular places will be booked. That said, depending on where in Murray Hill, you could find some places nearer the business area with empty tables. For example, Salute on Madison & 38th gets more of a business crowd I think so a Sat. night might not be so bad. Not sure I understand the spontaneity issue though. Is it you don't know what time you'll want to eat?

For Sunday near Astor Place, I'd really book. Lots of other people are also going to the show and/or shopping in the area. You know what time you'll be out (or can find out). What's the problem?

Sure, you may luck out....but I'd make reservations! Look at it this way: On a Saturday night in NYC, if you can easily get into a restaurant, maybe there's a good reason why it's not crowded!

The city will be packed with tourists this weekend, not to mention the locals who will be out and about.

Ask your concierge to make reservations for both nights.

I would hit Les Halles on Park and 28th and I certainly would make a reservation. Heck, I even make reservations for lunch!

On any weekend in December I would do resies - unless you plan just on modest neighborhood places.
