dinner in San Francisco near theatre
 

We are going to a play at the Orpheum theatre next week and would like to have dinner before the show (8:00pm). Any suggestions on places with great food nearby?Also we have a 9 yr old with us so I am not looking for super quiet and intimate. We can always find something on the menu for him, so we are not looking for kid oriented food, either.

Barb, just to forewarn you, the Orpheum is not in the best neighborhood. However, there will be lots of theatre people out walking about so you will be safe, just giving you a warning since you'll have a child with you.<BR><BR>We recently went to the symphony hall for a children's performance and ate at Citizen Cake on Grove Street beforehand. It was really a great place for kids and adults, a beautiful bakery counter loaded with all kinds of goodies, and the food on the menu was delicious. You will also find a fun, kid-friendly atmosphere at Max's Opera Cafe on Van Ness, right near the Opera House. Max's has a huge menu and a full bar to appease kids and adults alike. <BR><BR>You'll likely be dining with many other theatre patrons and you should make reservations. Be sure to tell the reservationist that you are going to a show and they will be sure to have you out the door in time.

I second Susan's warning. The tenderloin is not a great place to walk even with the pre/post theater crowd. <BR><BR>Max's would be a good choice, but also you might want to eat somewhere else in the city and take a cab to the theater.

Max's is great for a kid, but they don't take reservations. We love Hayes Street Grill on Hayes bet. Franklin and Gough and Zuni Cafe an old time SF favorite is just down Market from the theatre. For something less substantial try Vicolo Pizzeria at Ivy and Franklin. Whenever there are theatre and/or symphony/opera performances, this area is quite safe. You will see your quota of homeless, begging people, though so be prepared. And, make sure your tickets are good--the Orpheum is huge and sometimes the accoustics are poor. Have fun.

Thanks for the suggestions - and the warning! I forgot what that area is like, especially at night and park in the closest lot, although my husband wants to take a taxi and park in a safer area now that he has read the posts!I think we will opt for the Zuni cafe, I've always wanted to try it. We just went to the Nutcracker and ate at the Hayes St Grill prior, excellent seafood, and very close to Opera House. We have a Max's Opera Cafe near our house so I wanted to try something a little more SF - plus I think the reservations will be essential on a Friday night. Thanks again!

Try the Grand Cafe just about 1-2 blocks<BR>from the theater. Very good food and<BR>a lively, fun place located in the Hotel Monaco. Your 9 yr old will like it as much as you will. <BR>Good Luck<BR>
