Dinner for last night in Hawaii
 

We will be leaving Hawaii at 10pm and would like to know if there is a good restuarant in the Honolulu area that is on an upper floor of a building with windows that give us a nice view of the city and ocean at night?

Aaron's in the Ala Moana Hotel,
Hanohano Room in the Sheraton Waikiki,
Sarento's in the Ilikai

If your flight home is at 10pm, you'll have to be at the airport at 7pm (3 hours ahead like we were a couple of weeks ago). If you need 30-45 minutes to get from the restaurant to the airport, you could be looking at dinner at 5pm.

Betty - I noticed you were from Toronto. Is your flight considered international or is there some other reason that you needed to be at the airport 3 hours ahead of departure?

just a note, when we flew back from HNL to LAX on a 9pm departure, we arrived to the airport about 8pm. We had already printed our boarding passes over the internet earlier in the day and it went very smoothly. On the other hand, we had no luggage to check and drove ourselves in a car rental. For the mainland, don't think 3 hours would be necessary.

Three hours seems a bit much for a US mainland flight. I flew back in mid-March on a late evening flight on United -- which is probably one of the busier airlines at that time of night at HNL (and March is a very busy time with spring break). We arrived at about 9 for an 11pm flight. The agricultural inspection, check-in and security took less than 20 minutes, and it was a looong wait for the flight. 90 minutes probably would have been optimal, and I notice that's what United recommends for HNL on its website.

I'd check with your airline to see what they recommend.

As far as a restaurant with a city view, I can't help. We spent our last evening on the terrace at House Without a Key at the Halekulani listening to music, sipping Mai Tais, and watching a fabulous sunset. It was a great way to end our trip.

I think a flight from Honolulu (USA) to Toronto (Canada) is international.

Rusty, Although snippy, you are correct that Honolulu (USA) to Toronto(Canada) would be an international flight. However, Betty inToronto did not say if she was actually flying to Toronto, which may be why Nancy asked her.

In addition, there are Torontos in Ohio, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota, and Indiana. Betty could be from any of these.

I have a similar question. We are leaving Maui to Lax on a 6:00pm flight. Do you think it would be to tight to arrive at Maui airport on an Aloha air flight that arrives at 4:15. The airport is small so I was thinking we could easily make the connection but perhaps I am wrong. Thanks

Tellu, I think you would be fine with that window between flights. The interisland flights, when we've been there, run pretty close to on-time........

You can get great views just about enywhere in Hawaii, if you want great food try La Mer!...

When we were in Honolulu, both last year and year before we always make sure to get to Alan Wong (restaurant). Best restaurant we went to, as a matter of fact it was so outstanding that we went two nights in a row. The second night, we did not have reservations, but we were lucky enough to get a seat at counter where we watched some outstanding chefs and again had Outstanding meal. It is on 3rd floor of a building and one can face the mountain.

Icuy, there are no flights from from Honolulu to Toronto Ohio, Toronto Kansas, Toronto Illinois, Toronto Iowa, Toronto South Dakota, or Toronto Indiana.

Are we all in agreement that BettyInToronto was flying from US to Canada and that is why the 3 hour window? AND that we will not need to do the same for a flight from HNL to Phoenix?

Back to dining...If you want to eat at a nice place with a view that is closer to the airport, You could try John Dominis or Palaminos. Both are out of Waikiki and more towards Downtown, and both are right off the road to the airport (Nimitz/Ala Moana). John D is right on the water and faces the Waikiki skyline. Known for excellent (although pricy)seafood. Palaminos is only on the 3rd floor, but window seats get you a waterfront view.

At the airport is a place in the center of the terminal. many friends say the drinks are good. Don't know, I've never been there early enough to go in! There is a very peaceful (for an airport!) Asian garden in the same mid-terminal area. Don't know if it is open in the evenings.

How are your reception plans going??? Did you get your hala boxes and lei orders? I put a bunch of favors in hala boxes the other day (for a graduation party)and thought of you!

It's all coming along nicely. I'm going to wait to get the lai when I get to Oahu. As for the Hala boxes I'm going to order them from the below site. I got a sample box and several different cookies and they were wonderful. The box, filled with cookies, tied with bow and the personalized tag is only $6.50 - I can't put it all together myself for that.
