Atlantic City

MTV is in Seaside Heights for the summer, not Atlantic City. Seaside is about forty miles north of AC. It's definitely a summer town - lots of rentals and hotels that rent for the week. There's a large boardwalk with lots of games, rides and bars. It can be a little "honky-tonk" at times, lots of teenagers, but not quite so much as Wildwood.

I would further add that MTV fits right in culturally with Seaside. Atlantic City could use such a shot in the arm.
I think MTV decided to return to Seaside so that they could get stars living in or visiting New York to stop by - about an hour and a half/ hour and 3/4 drive.

JK,
Atlantic City needs a shot in the arm exactly because a lot of people don't find it attractive. The casinos by themselves are fairly good - certainly not up to Vegas standards. I've never had a problem walking the Boardwalk at night, but I also don't venture beyond the casino area - stil a very long walk from the Hilton to the Showboat, so I'm not talking about being a shrinking violet (or whatever that cliche is).
The beach has been neglected, sadly. It seems the casino operators have ben more interested in day trippers than attracting people to come for an extended period and enjoy the beach and shows along with the gambling (i.e., more like Vegas). They'll have to now with more competition for day tripper gambling money from slots in Delaware and Indian casinos in Connecticut (and proposals for more casinos in the Catskills). It's hoped that the new Borgata (MGM/Mirage) and other hotel expansions will bring everyone else along in that direction.
The city itself isn't in great shape, it's true, but it depends on what you're looking for and where you go. That's why I'd certainly say that MTV, if they did go to AC, would have more of a positive, rather than negative, effect on the town by bringing more people in - getting them onto the beach and, theoretically, spending money - at least on the Boardwalk with regard to the under 20 portion of the MTV crowd..

I think AC is getting a bad rap here. Yes, parts of it are in bad shape. But the main stretch on the boardwalk is fine, and the beach near the "downbeach" side of the boardwalk is very nice. Hilton rents cabanas, has a volleyball court set up, reggae bands, etc. Plus, neighboring Margate and Ventnor and Ocean City are all lovely towns with nice beaches, good cafes and expensive homes. There's good golf nearby and the boardwalk is really one of America's treasures. I think with the Borgota's arrival, AC will truly become a destination resort.

Jk,
As mentioned before, MTV is nowhere near AC. You say your parents visit every year - well, it's pretty much the same, although they have finally opened the tunnel from the expressway to the Marina, where there's a lot of new construction: Borgata, Renaissance Point, etc.
If anything, MTV would be a good thing regardless of whether or not your parents were trying to see Carson Daly or not - more people, better policing in the area so as not to have a negative incident on national television, etc. Carson Daly never mugged anyone in his life (so far as we know) there are plenty or others in AC who have - and if your parents have been smart enough to avoid those people so far, the same can be expected on subsequent trips.
