Dining Solo in San Diego
In early August I'll be staying at the Wyndham Emerald Plaza and would like to enjoy dinner in a restaurant that features "California" or seafood cuisine and is comfortable for solo diners. I won't have a car so suggestions for places within walking distance of the hotel (or perhaps a short cab ride) are welcome. Some folks have suggested Chive, Hob Nob Hill and George on the Cove. Thanks for your help!

Mary,
Georges at the Cove is more than a short cab ride away. I would stay in the Gaslamp Quarter which is only a few minute ride from the Wyndham. My favorites there are Blue Pointe Coastal Cuisine - excellent seafood and Dakota Grill - southwesternish food.
Another fun idea would be to walk a couple of blocks to the harbor and take the ferry to Coronado for dinner at Peohe's. They are right off of the ferry landing in Coronado and the short (15 min) ferry ride is a nice way to see the harbor. Peohe's has a great view of the downtown skyline.
Have fun.

All restaurants in dowtown are comfortable for solo diners because there are so many business travelers here. Otheres not mentioned :Walking distance - Chive is excellent and pricey, Napa Valley Grill which is on the top floor of the Horton Plaza Shopping Mall - sounds cheesy being in a mall but the atmosphere is very nice and perfect for solo dining while the food is very good and has a great wine selection. Sally's by the Hyatt Hotel, the Top of the Market (seafood) by the bay, Croces (founded by Jim Croce's wife) in the Gaslamp which also has two seperate bars one for Jazz and the other for Blues. George's is about 25 minutes from Downtown with no traffic so it's not that close and about a $30-35 cab ride each way. Hob Nob hill is great for breakfast and lunch.

Thanks for your help. Dining in the Gaslamp district may be a good idea, but I like the suggestion about the ferry to Coronado, so maybe I'll consider that. As an fyi, I've actually dined at Napa Valley Grille (New Jersey) several times and agree that although it's in a mall, it's really quite good--and you're right about their extensive wine list. Appreciate the suggestion about Croce's--sounds like it could be fun to do after dinner.

i'd either walk the gaslamp until i found a place with a decent band playing so you can listen to music wile you dine or the ferry to coronado is a good idea. another place would be the down at pacific beach. there are several restaurants there that have ocean views and would be a good "people watching" place while you dine. not quite a short cab ride but not too far either (20 minute drive).

I enjoyed dining in the Gaslamp district in one of the cafes that had outdoor dining. It's a great place to people watch and there are small tables outside perfect for the solo traveler. It was fight on a corner and across form a nightclub so there was plenty going on. Seems like it was directly across form Croce's.

Croce's is nice, but is very loud and busy. That might not be bad if you are dining alone.

I can't speak for the Dakota Grill, but I've always wanted to try it.
