Dining Room at The Modern...few minutes walk from most theatres...

From the NYTimes review today.

I find this a very reliable, festive, and interesting place to eat.

While it is, perhaps, expensive by NYC standards, I fell that the price/value ratio is very favorable and recommend it as one of the better restaurants in midtown.

However, having dined at both, the Modern's Bar Room is more fun.

Our financial advisor LOVES that restaurant. Keeps wanting to take us if we can ever get ourselves to NYC.

I went to lunch at the Bar Room on our most recent visit, and loved it. I had heard it was expensive and portions were small. I actually thought the portions were fine. They did look kinda small, but they were rich and flavorful and everything was just so good.

I would definitely go back.

The Modern Dining Room is one of my favorite restaurants. For me, it's become what Eleven Madison Park used to be but, sadly, is not any more: a "value" at the higher end of the dining realm. While it's not a place you'd want to eat every day or even every week, it's got enough special feeling that it's definitely worth a splurge.

I go much more often to the Bar Room, and if I order carefully, I can come out without spending a fortune. It's fun, and the food and drinks are uniformly good. I've never found the portions all that small, so they seem fairly priced to me, but it's not a cheap place. I'd definitely recommend it as a pre-theater place, especially at one of the theaters north of 46th Street.
