Dining in Williamsburg
 

We are taking a last minute trip to Williamsburg this weekend and staying at Kingsmill. We will go to the colonial area one night, but wondered if anyone had eaten at Kingsmill and whether or not you would recommend it. (We aren't usually eat at the hotel kind of people, but the resort has several options).

Would welcome other suggestions, as well. We'll have a 10 year old with us.

The Trellis is always reliable for innovative southern cuisine (right near the Wm-burg compound and home of "death by chocolate" desserts) but we have come to appreciate even more Le Yaca, a sweet french restaurant very near Kingsmill. Here is the web site. http://www.leyacawilliamsburg.com. Great food and very warm owners and servers.
If you travel to the same shopping complex where Trellis is, there is a very inventive and fun restaurant on the total opposite side of the shopping complex (opposite the large parking lot behind the Trellis) that was good last time we were there (early 2009). Unfortunately I cannot recall the name but if you walk across the lot and to the street behind the lot (also behind Baskin Robins) you will see it. By the way, we have a 9 year old daughter and all of these places are welcoming to kids.
Of course, Kings Arms at the historic area is fun for kids - roving musicians and lots of lanterns, but from D.C. you as adults will not be overly wild about the food (prime rib and overpriced wine). Having said that, we do sacrifice a lot for our kids' happiness!

Hi LizTD, thank you so much; my daughter is a fan of Chowning's :) so we'll be heading there for some colonial fun! Appreciate the recommendation of Le Yaca.

I know Kingsmill well. I won't be there this weekend because I'm out of town (in DC!!)

Kingsmill restaurants: Eagles is expensive and not something your son will enjoy, IMO. You can get burgers and more casual food off a limited menu in the bar. The Virginia smoking ban hasn't taken effect, though, so it a couple of people may be smoking. Eagles does have a very good breakfast. Regattas has good, casual food. I like their pizza. If it is warm enough, I would definitely check out the marina restaurant. It's open on weekends. I never eat at the Bray so I can't comment on that.

Maurizio's, Emerald, and Doraldo's are close and all fine to good. Le Yaca is a little higher end but your daughter will enjoy it there.

The place Liz mentioned is Blue Talon, a French bistro type place. It has a varied enough menu to interest your daughter. The owner of the Blue Talon will take over the Trellis at the end of this month.

If you need other suggestions we can certainly come up with more. Newtown, which is ten minutes from Kingsmill, has a lot of good restaurants.
