Dining in New Orleans
 

If you had to choose your favorite restaurant in New Orleans (nearly impossible I know) what would it be?

Expensive 1. Brigsten's 2. Grill Room 3. Commander's Palace (there are so may others that would be just as great Emrils NOLA Galatoires Gabrielle Bayona GandE Courtyard etc etc)
Inexpensive 1. Uglesich's (If you don't mind standing in line and getting down and dirty, a must) 2. Camellia Grill 3. Central Grocery (once again I hate to leave off Casamentos Mandich Praline Connection Port of Call Bozo's Mother's)

The best meal of my life was at Commander's Palace!

I agree with Judi, the best meat of my life has also been Commander's. I was in New Orleans this past November and ate at many wonderful restaurants but none can compare with Commander's. My second choice was Brennan's for breakfast. I had lunch at Central Grocery and also Camillia's Grill (which happens to be John Goodman's favorite hamburg place). Enjoy!

I also had one of the best meals ever at Commander's Palace. Didn't like our table though- too much traffic by waiters. Also, Mom got a splinter going downstairs, holding onto handrail. got a snippy comment from front reception people. Wrote a letter when got back home and got a cookbook sent to us as well as a phone call with an apology.

Everyone has their own special favorite for lots of different reasons so its hard to compare. If you've never eaten in New Orleans, then the predictable choices are good - Commander's etc., but they all start to taste a lot a like after a few visits. Many of the old favorites have become way too touristy and are turning out mediocre food compared to what was prepared to gain the reputation.

On a trip last month, my favorites were: breakfast at Mother's (discovered, but still hasn't lost its soul), The Pelican Club (excellent seafood - bistro noisy) and Feelings Cafe in Fauborg Marigny (don't let the name throw you off). Mike's on the Avenue in the Lafayette Hotel was excellent too.

But again, if you've never been to New Orleans don't miss the standards. A breakfast at Brennan's is hard to beat. Try the Carribbean Room at the Hotel Ponchtrain instead of Commander's. Its wonderful and not so so so "in".

I would have to say "Court of the 2 Sisters" one of the best restaurants in my opinion. But I think Brennans is the biggest rip off. I object to paying 100.00 for 2 people to have breakfast of eggs benedict and Bloody Marys.

Emeril's, Emeril's, Emeril's. I still dream of the crabcakes and I haven't been there for over a year. The banana cream pie is also good. The Grill Room @ the Windsor Court Hotel is rated one of the best restaurants in the U. S. Cafe du Monde for bignets for breakfast. Skip Commander's Palace.

I Still would vote for Commander's Palace. No matter what, it's the best. There's another restaurant owned by the Brennan's---I think it's "Mister B's" and it's much more reasonable. The Court of the 2 Sisters is also excellent. Getting hungry writing this!
