Taking my husband to new york for his birthday. Wondering if theirs a diner for breakfeast near the hotel? Looking for a basic new york diner experience?
Thanks,

Manhattan has very few diners. Perhaps you mean a coffe shop (like on Seinfeld - not like Starbucks) - is that what you're looking for?

The Brooklyn Diner on W 57th is a short walk from the Essex House. I've never tried it, but maybe some of the NY'rs on this site have.

This is the link to diners and coffee shops at menupages. You can further refine it to your neighborhood (both east and west 50s would probably be OK).

Thanks everyone,
I had just researched diners or coffee shops on menupages. Was wondering if olympic diner or park cafe were in the area. Just wanting something quick and close in the morning, and these diners are on 7th & 8th??
Thanks,
Susan

Actually a decent one around the corner... don't remember the name though.

Go out of the hotel, make a left, walk down to Broadway... 1 block down on the left.

suanniammsncom - Your hotel is on Central Park South (which becomes 59th Street) between 6th and 7th Aves. Rough 20 blocks north to south (these blocks are shorter than east to west) make a mile. Olympic Diner is around 49th and 8th, so 1/2 mile south plus 1.5 long blocks west. Park Cafe is considerably closer - just 3-4 short blocks south and on 7th, so 1/2 long block west.

When looking at addresses at menupages it's handy to have a good map available. If you don't have a print map definitely get one before your trip, but for this type of stuff, the maps at google are really handy because you can type in your address, get directions, and zoom in easily.

The Brooklyn Diner is excellent and in a dining car.

Next door, Pick-A-Bagel is even better for breakfast.

Both are on the southwest side of Seventh Avenue on West 57th. Eat breakfast at Pick-A-Bagel (you'll see the line forming outside before you see the shop) and supper at Brooklyn Diner.
