Diner near Midtown in NY
 

We are staying near 42nd street and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good diner or restaurant for breakfast Sunday morning? Thanks in advance!

What kind of breakfast do you want? Bacon/eggs or croissant/coffee?
How much are you willing to spend?

I'm thinking a bacon/eggs type of meal. Eggs benedict would be great but I don't know if diners sell that kinds of "fancy" breakfast. I'm hoping no more that $15 per person.

Skylight Diner. 402 W. 34th Street - , maybe at 9th or 10th avenue.

Westway Diner - 9th avenue at 44th Street

These are regular diners - nothing fancy. Big portions at good prices.

I have personally eaten at Cosmic Diner, 8th Ave/52nd St. The food is good and the service is fast.

A nicer place is the restaurant in the W Hotel Times Square. They had eggs Benedict the last time I had breakfast there. A little more than $15 a person, however.

There are so many dining options in your neighborhood, I highly doubt you will have trouble finding anything.

Heading north from 42nd Street to 44th Street and 8th Avenue, you'll see a coffee shop on your left (ignore the couple of remaining peep shows). I can't remember the name of it, but it is fairly large -- two dining rooms and has great and reasonable traditional breakfasts. You'll have to squeeze your way between the cops and firemen who seem to all eat there. You'd really have to pig out to spend more than $25 for the two of you!

A little further north, between 45th and 46th also on 8th but on the right side heading north, you'll find Daniella Trattoria where they serve great breakfasts for under $ 10.

I don't really think there are any destination breakfast places in that immediate area. Unless you have some specific reason for staying near the hotel (like you're leaving afterward), I'd get out of the neighborhood and go to a more residential neighborhood. Also, brunch (served later around 11-12) is very popular on Sunday.

I'm with the teacher. Get out of that dreadful neighborhood. Balthazar in Soho (Spring/Broadway) serves Sunday brunch from 10-4. And they have eggs Benedict on their menu! Afterward, take a spin around the Museum of Prada (Broadway) and wonder why that handbag you are admiring costs $4,000.

There are several large corporate headquarters in Times Square. Why is that important you ask....well, because they stay in business because the food is probably decent and it likely doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

The specific place I'm thinking of is on 49th between 7th and Broadway, directly across from Lehman Brothers office.

My suggestion is look for a place near 42nd, 43rd, 47th and 49th that looks like it caters to the nearby office workers. We like routine usually go to the same place everyday.

Jeez, I am stupid. I didn't realize you said Sunday Morning. Never mind.

BTW, if still open try Popovers on the UWS.

Where along 42nd St. are you staying? If W. 42nd, then brunch places in Chelsea and the UWS could be feasible. If E. 42nd, we can provide recommendations on the UES or Murray Hill area.

Comfort Diner on 45th between 2nd and 3rd Ave. Popular with locals and those that wouldn't want to overspend at Riingo in Hotel Alex.

Balthazar is wonderful, but has anyone ever gotten out of there for less than the requested $15 per person? I didn't think the poster was looking for a destination brunch, but maybe I misunderstood.

Another vote for the Comfort Diner. We had a great Sunday morning breakfast there. Line up and wait for a table or a seat at the counter. Is the Red Flame Coffee Shop opened on Sundays? That might be another option, 44th between 5th and 6th.

SUnday brunch at balthazar requires a reservation. It books up quickly.

Pigalle on 8th Ave. @48th St. serves a nice brunch on Sunday.

Looks like Amy wants a diner breakfast on a Sunday morning, not necessarily a Brunch. Red Flame Diner: 44th street between 5th & 6th Aves -- closer to 6th.

Don't I recall a recent thread of someone looking for a big and possibly expensive Sunday Brunch buffet in New York? They were bombarded by people saying not to do that, but to do a nice breakfast or regular brunch instead. Now someone wants a simple and inexpensive diner breakfast and we get expensive and/or lavish brunch suggestions. What's wrong with accepting that some people do know what they are looking for?

Pigalle calls it brunch, but you actually order off a menu & can have breakfast for under $10 pp.

First of all, Patrick, I don't think of the brunch/Sunday breakfast at Balthazar to be "lavish."
I suggested the restaurant because of the "buzzing" atmosphere and the neighborhood. The eggs B at Balthazar are $16. That and a cup of cafe au lait will set you back about $20. Hardly "lavish." You could spend more at the Howard Johnson's on 10th Ave.
