Diner in San Francisco

We will be in San Francisco in September and I read an article in a UK newspaper about the city. It recommended Cliff House at Sunset but said that locals 'in the know' go to a diner up the hill. Is that towards the baths? And does anyone know what its called and what it is like?
Thanks Hilary

They are probably referring to Louie's, although I wouldn't call it a true diner (which are usually open 24/7)but it is more casual than the Cliff House, cheaper, and has a diner-like menu.

I don't remember Louie's serving dinner when I lived in the area many years ago, maybe that has changed now. They did a pretty decent breakfast.

Yes, I think it must be Louie's I searched the forum again once I had the name. But someone described it as 'hole in the wall' what does that mean - that you cannot sit down or simply that they do 'take away' meals too? Hilary

"hole in the wall" usually refers to a lack of decor and amenities, to put it nicely; e.g., maybe good food, but a less than nice atmosphere (and--gasp--paper napkins).

Check out Beach Chalet and Park Chalet, just south of the Cliff House, but with better food IMHO.
