Corned beef.

I had a good salami omelet when I was there last. I'm not actually a fan of deli meats. But the pickles, the dilled tomatoes, the salami, the matzo ball soup...yes, thank you, ma'am!

They have a sign: "Send a salami to your boy in the Army".

eks -- true enough.

goddess -- if you're a fan of deli food try the 2nd Avenue Deli sometime.

If I were at the Tenement Museum and
I wanted lunch, I would take a quick taxi ride over to L'Ecole at the French Culinary Institute on Broadway. The cheap prix-fixe lunch is a real bargain!

After lunch, I would go shopping at Pearl River Mart.

And the side dishes at 2nd Ave are far superior to Katz's.

"send a salami to your boy in the army"...been their byline for decades. Used to be a billboard somewhere in the vicinity announcing the same.

IMDonehere Jul 2nd, 2014 03:12 PM

Sorry Stu, a salami just doesn't cut it these days.

"And the side dishes at 2nd Ave are far superior to Katz's."

We're not going for the culinary experience. As far as I'm concerned, deli (no matter how fabulous) is about as far as you can get from a foodie's dream. The grown-ups in the party have all been to Katz's. This trip is a treat for the 12-year-old who is experiencing NY for the first time so we want to take her to special or famous places. The 'classics', if you will -- for example, the top of the Empire State Building as opposed to the Top of the Rock.

Be sure to let the kid "bribe" the meat slicer. For one dollar he will get a piece to taste.

Katz's is NYC experience, and not just for tourists either.

the Pickle Guys are at 49 Essex Street...they are ...still there and nearby on Grand is Kossar's where you can get bialys .. recently on a Sunday around 5pm it was buy one get one for 90 cents

the tenement museum gift shop has a/c and there are a lot of books and things that would be of interest to a 12 year old as well as adults.. and not tacky touristy stuff.

goddesstogo Jul 3rd, 2014 06:22 PM

Alas, IMD, the kid is one of the vegetarians. Maybe she can bribe the pickle guy.

I think they've renovated the TM gift shop since I was there but I do remember it as having some very interesting slide shows and fun stuff to buy.

That might be a first.
