Diego bound for 3-day R & R

Hi everyone! I'm planning a 3-day getaway to San Diego for my 37th birthday at the end of Sept/1st of Oct. Never been to Cali., but after reading ur posts, I thought Diego might be a good start for the type of weekend I seek. Would luv ur input/suggestions!

I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE the ocean - not for swimming but for watching, strolling, laying out (relax/reflect). By the ocean is where I want to spend most of my time.

Need a safe, clean, comfortable hotel for the basics, but don't plan to be there much. Don't want to fuss with driving. Not the zoo/tour type. Enjoy live music (esp. soft jazz); great wine, food, coffees, performng arts.

Much appreciative...javaflava

You might like the Best Western Beach View Lodge in Carlsbad which is a great town on the beach about 30 miles north of SD- hotel is right across the street from the beach- lots of restaurants and shops close by- its my favorite beachtown.

There is a coaster station downtown Carlsbad which you can use for transportation to airport ( with transfer to bus downtown SD) if you choose- I have done that several times and works well- as long as flight times coincide with train times.

There is also another Best Western in Carlsbad right on the beach - Beach Terrace Inn - if you really want to enjoy the sound of the waves rolling in-
also close to the center of town- havent stayed there- just did a lobby walk through.

Or- I recently stayed at the Days Inn Encinitas which worked out great for us-
short walk to Moonlight Beach, walked to restaurants in town, there are several places close by for live music and the Coaster Station is just a block from hotel so easy to use if you choose.
The Days Inn was an OK place to stay, clean, quiet, small fridge in room.
There is a Best Western next door which looked like some of the rooms had great ocean views as another option.

I love the beach towns north of SD -
Encinitas, Solana Beach, Carlsbad -
Del Mar

have a great trip

Hi javaflava..
FYI nobody calls San Diego "Diego" or California "Cali"..just so you know..
There is alot of places that you can hang at the beach and it sounds like you might enjoy the North County of SD or maybe La Jolla as well..
You can try the Sea Lodge in LJ, oceanfront hotel that might have cheaper rates for offseason or try the Hotel La Jolla..I don't know what your budget is but around $150 a night is about average..

There is a BW Inn & Suites that is 3 blocks to the beach and downtown LJ.
Sunbum mention the BW in Carlsbad which would be a good fit too..
You can also try Pacific Beach..maybe the BW Blue-Sea Lodge

There is alot to do with people watching, laying out and relaxing....good food too at Kono's in PB, World Famous and the Green Flash.
Also, sandiego.org is another good place to check out sites too..
Have fun and Happy 37th Birthday!

I would recommend staying in Coronado. There is a huge big beach...great for walking, running, people watching, either on the sand or sitting on the big boulders along the sidewalk.

Live theater in town, several nice places to dine alone- tent city, Miguels, Il fornio (on the bay), and you can rent a bike to cruise around like a local. If you do, make sure you head over to the golf course and ride under the bridge on the bikeway. Youll come out by the Marriott near First and Orange Ave.

The gaslamp quarter is right across the bridge by car, or you can take the pedestrian/bike ferry over.

I spent nearly 5 weeks in Coronado this summer. found it very relaxing, while still having good food and fun.

Coronado Inn is a very basic little motel, not near the beach, but only 5 minutes by bike, or Glorietta Bay inn or of course the Hotel del Coronado are priecier options.

Thanks so much for the area/hotel info. It was very helpful. I'm planning to stay in Coronado, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the area and trotting to some the spots you've mentioned. I'll probably wish I had a longer stay...Thanks again!!!
