Dewz: Modesto, CA
 

I recently visited the Dewz restaurant located in Modesto, CA. The eatery had been highly recommended by my beau's daughter, who is one of the pickiest people I have met. Everywhere we go to dine, she complains about her food, so I had faith that if she liked this place it had to be good.
Dewz had apparently relocated not long before my boyfriend and I ventured in. Although I had not seen the previous location, I could tell there was an effort to seem more modern. The dining area consisted of one medium-sized room with a very high ceiling and creative lighting. The walls were stone with large paintings. The seating was not what I had expected. There were no booths per se, but instead tables for two situated along a couch or bench-like seat with cushion and pillows that stretched the length of the room on either side. The opposite side of the table had a chair. I have experienced this seating arrangement before but am not fond of it- I feel like I am seated too far away from the person I am with. It was mentioned that the other room I had caught a glimpse of was for larger parties.
Dewz has an extensive wine and drink selection, as well as a bar and small lounge at the front of the establishment. I eyed a delicious-sounding cocktail called a "Naughty Schoolgirl" before deciding not to drink that night.
The staff was very friendly and attentive. The employee who prepared our Caesar salad tableside chatted happily as he made an impressive, bold dressing. We couldn't resist an appetizer that consisted of a white cheese(I don't recall which), mushrooms, spinach, and herbs wrapped in a flaky pastry on top of a light sauce. It did not disappoint. I decided to order the Filet Mignon, which is prepared differently daily. That night, it was being served with a blue cheese butter. I ordered the steak medium-well(I know you are supposed to order it medium rare/ medium but I can't stand to see the pink), and it came out wonderful- not dry, and the butter was fantastic. The vegetables were fresh and cooked to perfection- not mushy, not raw, but just right. The mashed potatoes were creamy and had a hint of garlic.
My date ordered the fresh salmon prepared blackened, and was very pleased with his meal. He even went so far as to tell the owner that it was the best salmon he has ever had. We opted to skip dessert because we were already full, although the choices were enticing. I would give the food very high ratings on any scale.
The only downsides were the couch and chair combination seating and the bathrooms. I had to walk past the kitchen, dodging waiters only to find that the restaurant had lavatories which only accommodated one guest at a time. However, it is not a very large building and they may not have room for anything larger. The bathroom was decorated in lively colored tiles and the outside of the doors were painted with exciting figures of a man or woman. New wave artwork is sprinkled throughout Dewz, keeping ones sight aroused.
For any small atmosphere misconfigurations, the menu and service overcompensate for. I would recommend anyone living or visiting the vicinity of Modesto, CA book a reservation to try out Dewz- this little place books up fast!

Hey, our car broke down near Patterson once and so we were towed to Modesto. The most exciting thing to happen was our son lost a tooth there, lol!

I bought an over sized Fanny pack in a surplus store there once. ;-)

Well it is a big family secret but my late husband (a Realtor Broker) and one of his Realtor Agents sold a big ranch somewhere around Modesto. My husband called me from some bar in Modesto around 7:oopm to tell me "weeeesh will not beeee driving home tooooonight hic, as Jay and I are celebrating, hic". That is all I know about Modesto, lol.

When I saw ‘restaurant in Modesto’ the first thing I thought of was a day trip along the Gold Rush Trail we would drive each year from the valley.

Starting in the morning, we would take 59 west, off the 99 in Merced, and then take the LaGrange turn off to Coulterville. That part is flat and rural.

But once on 49 the fun starts as you head up to Chinese Camp, Jamestown, Sonora, Columbia, and Angel’s Camp. These are great little historic gold rush towns.

We would then backtrack 108 east through Oakdale and into Modesto just in time for dinner there!

How was that for making this travel related? :)

My son had a school pal that moved to Modesto. We did a couple trips there a year to drop him off for a night or two (the other mom would bring him back to San Jose). The highlight, beside the surplus store, was finding the Mimi's Cafe in town (a chain but decent). Anyway, I'm sure it has more to offer...

The more obvious road trip for someone doing a Gold Rush tour the first time is to drive all of 49 connecting Sacramento or thereabouts to Yosemite.

But you have to be willing to leave that fine dining establishment in Modesto behind. ;)

LOL, it's actually conveinent for travel or sporting events. My daughter actually asked me to wear it to the 49er game a few weekes ago, cause she knows it holds a lot! Yes, I too think of the Petersen case...
