Detroit en route
 

Hoping to stop off in Detroit for a few days next September (with wife & daughter) en route from Scotland to Dallas, can anyone help with a rough weather guide for that time of year and some reasonably priced hotels also. I have seen some places to stay but not sure if prices quoted are per person or per room. Perhaps someone could suggest some appropriate reading material. Many thanks

I don't know about hotels as I live in Toledo, but the weather in September is usually beautiful. Clear blue skies, cool nights with a hint of fall in the air and low humidity. September is one of our best months.

mind telling us what you are going to Detroit for? It is a rather odd destination for foreign visitors, but there must be a reason you want to spend time here. Please let us know. It may be that you really don't want to stay in downtown Detroit (who would?) but maybe Dearborn, or one of the nice northern suburbs would be more to your liking. If we know what you want to do here or why you think you want to come, then maybe we can help.

For visitor information and to order a free visitor guide to be mailed to you, go to www.visitdetroit.com. This is where I have found the best visitor information and their guidebook is very helpful. I have visited Detroit in October and the weather has been beautiful, as mentioned in the (nearby city of) Toledo posting above. I have found the best rates at hotels near the airport, especially if you can get a weekend rate. I like the Hampton Inn. There is also a Baymont Inn nearby that also is affordable. The suburban city of Dearborn also has numerous hotels. Hope you are going to visit Greenfield Village and The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. That could take up 1 or 2 days of your visit depending on your pace. If you like touring old estates I highly recommend the Edsel Ford Mansion in Grosse Pointe. As with any major city beware of high-crime areas. Detroit can have alot of negatives, but I also have found it has many more positives if you look for them. Also, be aware that Michigan drivers do like to drive VERY fast!

Huh, Jackie? What hotels in the US normally quote rates per person??? All the hotels I stay at quote per room, not per person.

thanks for the info so far guys, re Verna,s reply, we are going to Dallas to visit freinds but our flight takes us via Detroit so thought it might be fun to stop over for a couple of days there and back with a week or so in Dallas in between. Mike, many thanks lots of good info there, now if only you guys could decide on those hotels :)

I'd really suggest staying in Dearborn. A wonderful place would be the Marriot near Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum. You could easily spend one or two days at that double site and enjoy a wonderful outdoor &quot;village&quot; of authentic Americana homes and businesses moved there or restored -- The Wright Brothers bicycle shop (where they built the first airplance), as well as their boyhood home fully furnished. Old fashioned fire house, drug store, etc. And the museum is not only a wonderful collection of cars, but nearly everything else to do with American science and industry. <BR>In addition you can visit the Ford Motor factory. And there are nice shops and restaurants in Dearborn.<BR>The suggestion about Edsel Ford's home in Grosse Point is a good one, and there is also Fairlane, the beautiful Henry Ford estate and gardens also in Dearborn. Dearborn is a little closer to the airport than downtown, and I would think that one &quot;day trip&quot; into the downtown area would be more than plenty. Downtown Detroit is not one of America's brightest spots!
