Detroit area getaway - outside of the city

my boyfriend and i will be in detroit for four days at the end of august. it'll be my first visit. my interest is in exploring the neighborhoods, landmarks, and culture. as i'm sure four days is barely sufficient to get a good grasp of detriot's essence, i would also like to squeeze in a short trip outside of the city within this time frame (overnight trip). we will have a car so transportation won't be an issue.

what we are looking for outside of the city is RELAXATION. a lake experience would be just the thing. i've read about Lexington, which i am open to - just wonder if anyone has any other suggestions of spots that may be more off the beaten path. some mellow outdoor activities would be nice.

hope this isn't too vague. grateful for any replies.

Hi Rae,

I've been to Lexington many times. It's a nice little village, but the emphasis is on LITTLE. It does not have any real things for a visitor to see or do, and the dining options are certainly limited. I can't comment on any accomodations since I have never spent the night there.

I have to agree with MargaretandTony. Lexington is a good place to stop for lunch. The winery on the main street has really good sandwiches. We stayed at a small cabin that I don't think I would recommend. Other than that I think that most people were camping or boating. The beach is pretty small.

Off hand I cannot think of a place for just overnight. If you had 2 night, Traverse City and the surrounding area would be nice.

Looking at all of the old posts brought up by a spammer gave me an idea. Saugatuck/Douglas is about a 2.5 hour trip. Saugatuck is on the west coast of Michigan. The town is small with galleries, restaurants and small shops. Douglas is more of the same. Oval Beach is a beautiful beach. Overnight would be sufficient time. I recommend The Maplewood Hotel in Saugatuck. Beautiful B&B.

You are right tomboy. It is 2 hours 41 minutes, per yahoo map, from my house about 5 minutes outside of Detroit.

Dang! I stand corrected. I guess the M-6 bypass saved more time than I thought.

There's a B&B in Saugatuck, the Wickwood Inn, which at least used to be owned by one of the writers of the Silver Palate Cookbook.
