Detour to Vernal and Dinosaur National Monument

Message: We (parents and 11 year-old son who loves dinosaurs)are taking a cross-country trip from the east coast to Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Parks. Is Dinosaur National Monument and Vernal, Utah worth a detour and an additional day drive from Jackson, WY?

If we do this detour, we would take route 70 to Colorado Springs and visit Pike's Peak.

This would only add 2 days to our trip. Is it worth it?

Thanks,

Lynda

Dinosaur National Monument has a working quarry. I'm sure your son would really enjoy it if he is into dinosaurs. Our boys enjoyed it even though they weren't into dinosuars. This is also a very scenic area. Make sure you do the drive and find the petroglyphs.

Thanks, Utahtea. As you can see our trip has taken on a life of its own. We've gone from trying to do everythin in 14 days to almost 3 weeks. My husband is actually looking forward to all of it.

utahtea:

Are you talking about the Sego Canyon Petroglyphs near Moab or another site?

I'm glad your DH has come on board! Three weeks is going to be great!!!

There are a few petroglphys area on the scenic drive in Dinosaur National Monument that starts near the Quarry. It's been a while since we've been to Dinosaur National Monument (I want to get back there soon) and the petroglpys areas were not well marked. Don't know if that has changed.

If you are going to Pike's Peak then you might want to make a quick stop at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument which is only about 30 miles from the entrance to Pike's Peak.

I'd love to know the route you will be taking. LOL.... of course, if I know the route....the next thing you know, this will be a 4 week trip!

Thumbs up on Dinosaur-I'm an adult, not particularly into dinosaurs, but I thought it was pretty cool. I think there are some neat float trips down the river there, too.
