Destination ideas - 3 day weekend Apr '09

I am looking for any US destination for a 3 day weekend that meets the following criteria:

1. Lot's to do for someone traveling alone
2. Not huge on beaches
3. Lived in Vegas for nearly 30 years - not what I am looking for on a vacation
4. History, architecture and sightseeing are positives
5. Nightlife is not extremely important, but something should be going on after 9pm

Any ideas out there?

P.S. I am a 40-yr old male

Chicago would be my choice. Weather would be a concern. Where are you coming from?

NYC, Philly, DC? I would think any major city would be what you are looking for.

How about New Orleans?

Are you still in Las Vegas? Where you live now would be helpful.

Santa Fe is on my list of places to go.
San Francisco would be a favourite US city for a long weekend or NYC depending on where you are coming from.

Boston, Philadelphia, NYC, San Francisco

For the things you named, if I had to pick one city it would be Boston.

1 warning if you choose Boston is that April 20th is the Marathon so it would be very busy.

Thanks for the responses. I currently am living in Phoenix, AZ. Boston and SF are great choices, but I have been to both several times and am going to try somewhere new. Sassy_cat, I am intrigued by your choice of Santa Fe. What draws you there? TC - About your idea of D.C., do you think it's possible in just a long weekend? I think I would get caught up in trying to see too much and run myself ragged.

I love Santa Fe but it wouldn't be my pick for you with your criteria.

Since you've already been to Boston and SF and agreed that had you not already been several times, they'd be great choices, I vote Philadelphia. Incredible history, architecture and sightseeing here, but since Center City is encompassed in a couple-mile radius between two rivers, it's very manageable.

Thanks everyone! It turns out I have a family member in Dallas that is wanting me to visit, so Dallas it is. I will be strongly considering both Washington D.C. and Philadelphia for a weeklong vacation in June. Thanks for all the input.
