There are literally dozens of such hotels. How much are you interested in paying?

"In the middle of the city" reduces options since most of the newest/trendiest hotels are in the trendy downtown areas of Soho, Tribeca, lower east side, meatpacking district.

The London is probably the nicest design hotel in midtown and is all suites. The Bryant Park, the Royalton, 6 Columbus are some others. But the ultra design places are more like the Bowery, Hotel on Rivington, Cooper Square, Thompson LES. The website tablethotels.com lists most of the trendiest including some of the more affordable ones. If you don't mind staying downtown, quikbook.com often has very good prices for some of these.

Prices vary significantly based on season and even specific dates (that is Marathon weekend high, Memorial Day weekend low). You might find some of these places for as low as $250 a night at times.

Oh - and by "middle of the city" do you mean Midtown (basically a business district plus theaters and traditional department store shopping) or all of Manhattan (versus the outer boroughs or New Jersey). "Downtown" in NYC is actually partly more trendy areas and partly the financial district.
