Denver to Keystone, SD
 

This summer our family's visting relatives in Denver, then driving to Mount Rushmore. We were going to break up the drive with a night in Cheyenne WY---but it doesn't seem quite far enough. Any other suggestions? Thanks

I'm confused. Are you referring to Keystone ski resort in Colorado, or a plave called Keystone in SD? If it's the Keystone in Colorado, how does it fit into your schedule? Also, what do you mean by "it doesn't seem quite far enough"? Far enough for what?

This post is quite confusing, please clarify.

I'm not confused, I'm sure that you meant Keystone SD where Mt Rushmore is located. I would recommend driving straight thru from Denver. Cheyenne is only a little over an hour away from Denver and there isn't much of anything in between Denver and Mt. Rushmore. We use to live in Rapid City and did the drive all the time. It's not too bad, less than 400 miles. Enjoy.

I agree with Beechbum, it is an easy one day drive from Denver to Keystone, South Dakota. You might want to consider an alternate route using 1-76 to Brush, CO and then north through Nebraska to Keystone. Take a look at a map. I found the scenery (grasslands and bluffs) preferable to the drive through Wyoming. We visited Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Wind Cave & Jewel Cave over a long weekend and had a great time.

Just to give you another idea...When we were out there in '02, we went to an afternoon Rockies game. We hit rush hour traffic leaving Denver. But we'd made a reservation at a Best Western along I 25 about an hour or so past Cheyenne. When we hit the road the next morning, we headed to Devil's Tower. After a couple of hours there, we drove over to Custer State Park where we also had reservations. It was kind of a long day on the road, but a very enjoyable one. On the way to Devil's Tower we ate lunch in Sundance. My daughter still loves her "Where the kid got his name" t-shirt!

That sounds like an interesting trip. If you were going to stop halfway, do you have any suggestions?

We would love to squeeze in Devil's Tower, and, as a matter of fact are staying at Custer State Park. What city, if you recall, is the BW an hour past Cheyenne? Sounds like a good idea.

Deziree, I just went to the Best Western website. I'm pretty sure the place we stayed was the Torchlite Inn in Wheatland, WY. But, actually, if you're starting from Denver earlier in the day, you'd probably want to try to drive farther into Wyoming anyway. We had spent the previous four nights in Frisco and had driven into Denver that morning for the game. So driving just a little past Cheyenne worked well for us. But, if you're leaving Denver in the morning, you might want to consider driving all the way to Devil's Tower. Since we didn't spend a night in that area, I can't recommend a place to stay. But maybe someone else will. You might want to look into the possibility of spending the night in Sundance. Personally, I think a detour to Devil's Tower is well worth the extra time and miles.
