Denver in May / Grand Hyatt Denver
Hello.
My husband and I (mid-30s) will be spending 5 nights in Denver in May. I have booked a room at the Grand Hyatt Denver, and am looking for feedback on it--central to attractions? How close to Coors Field? Also I'm interested in suggestions of things to do in Denver. We're thinking of a couple of day trips--Golden? Breckenridge? Rocky Mountain National Park? Is there any fishing in the area (charters, etc.)? Thanks for any help! |
Hi HRH,
I don’t think you could have picked a place with a better location to downtown attractions! While I’ve never stayed at the Grand Hyatt, it looks like a very nice 4*+ hotel. From what I can tell, you are about: A couple of block from 16th St Mall – great for strolling, shopping, people watching, street entertainers, etc. (There are also carriage rides you can take around this area that I believe you can pick up from here.) 1 mile from Coors Field 1.2 mile from the Denver Art Museum A bit over a mile from the capitol building (don’t forget to take a cheesy picture standing on the step that is exactly 1 mi high!) Maybe a mile to the Denver Performing Arts Complex (take in a play) Same distance to Larimer St (historic district with some good restaurants) It’s a bit hard to read, but here is a link to a map of major attractions in the area you are staying in. http://www.denver.org/maps/map_dtattractions.asp As far as day trips go, I think that would be an excellent idea. I’m assuming you will have a car? It’s about 80-90 miles to Breckenridge. I’ve only been there once but I remember it being part charming town, part resort town (condos and fast food joints). About the same distance to Rocky Mtn Ntnl Park. A long day trip (but one of my favorites) is to go through RMNP, pass through Grand Lake (very cute town), head toward Winter Park, over Berthoud Pass and back down I70 to Denver. A nice loop with no backtracking. Some very scenic country. Please keep in mind that the weather in CO and in the mountains in particular can (and does) change in a heartbeat. May might sunny and dry or it may be cold and snowy, ya just never know! As far as fishing goes, I’ve never used a charter so I’m not much help there. If you do the driving loop I mentioned, you will pass very near Grand Lake which has some excellent fishing. I’ve never fished without a license so I don’t know what the laws are for day trippers and vacationers. Maybe a web search will turn something up. Let me know if you need anything else. Welcome to Denver and I hope you have a Great trip! |
If possible, I'd suggest you spend more time than just a day-trip to the mountains. Chotzi's suggestion to drive RMNP to Grand Lake, Winter Park, and back is a spectacular drive, and well worth an overnight in Grand Lake. Make sure Trail Ridge Road is open in May, though, because the weather is iffy and could even still be too snowy to open the road then.
Grand Lake is one of the largest alpine lakes and is breathtaking with mountains around it. Grand Lake Lodge has fantastic dinners and a porch overlooking the lake that is not to be missed. If Trail Ridge isn't open, I'd still suggest an overnight in Grand Lake, or in Estes Park or Breckenridge. You can do them in one day, but it's a lot of driving and I think you'd not get the relaxation the Rockies offer. If you don't have a car, you can check the Amtrak schedule. I think you could do a day-trip from downtown Denver to the Winter Park area, or even go to Glenwood Springs for an overnight. Have fun and enjoy Denver and the Rockies! |
I'd skip Golden, really just a burb of Denver. Breckenridge is good I'd also look at Vail at that time of year. It is OFF season and you can get great rates. We like the Cascade Spa & Resort. The fitness facilites are nice if the weather is bad. A massage is always a good idea to me. :)
It is on the River with a nice outdoor heated pool. For fishing, fly fishing, look at www.summmitnet.com for Brecenridge area. You will enjoy downtown Denver, a great town for walking. |

We love Denver. Check out Red Rocks. We happened to catch a concert there and it was incredible. Even if there isn't a show, it is worth seeing. We enjoyed the "Coors" tour also. Wynkoop Brewing Company is a fun place to go. There is plenty to keep you busy for 5 nights!
