Denver/Breckenridge in May?

I am trying to plan a trip to Colorado around May 9 for a week. I am getting mixed signals on what we can do considering the weather. Not going to ski but would be fun to try, looking to do other outdoor activites and see site. Will roads be closed and will it be too cold to white water raft? 2 adults and adult kids 20+.

May is a funny month. It's referred to as "mud season". Skiing is over, it may snow a day or two but it's gone fast. I don't think you can raft. I know that parts of Lake Dillon may still be frozen. Breckenridge is a working town so there will still be plenty open but you may find some restaurants closed for a break between ski season and summer. Most roads will be open but probably not Trail Ridge or Indpendence Pass.

As Grasshopper hs already mentioned, May is considered "mud season". It's not very pretty and not much going on although you can usually get good deals on rentals and in restaurants. Mud season is popular among locals for the two for one dinner offerings.

For skiing...A-Basin is likely to be the only place open. The regular roads in the area will be open unless we get a real snowstorm. However, the more scenic Trail Ridge and Independence Pass won't open until closer to the end of the month. No rafting either. Outdoor activities are iffy. It can be nice in the mountains or you could experience a blizzard.

I'd probably stay closer to or in Denver/Boulder area and take a day trip or two into the mountains. Or, the Estes area might be another option.

We went to Breckenridge the first week in May a couple of years ago.
We flew into Denver and spent the night-when we woke up it was snowing and we were worried about the road to Breckenridge, but we made it fine and the snow was beautiful. After two days the weather warmed up and we hiked and did a lot of walking around Breck.
The restaurants did have a lot of two for one specials and they were great. One of favorites was in Friso at the Blue Spruce Inn.

The altitude in Breck did bother me for a day or two and then I was fine.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

This is different than what you had in mind. Further south, but you could hit a lot in a week. But Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and The Great Sand Dunes would probably be good then. Still might be cool though. Don't know if the zipline out of Durango is open that early, but it is super fun. www.soaringcolorado.com
you could also find some hotsprings in many areas of colorado to soak in.
