Denali Highway

Have any of you been on the Denal Hwy in May or June 07? Am wondering how bad it is and whether it is scheduled for any improvements, however slight, between now and July 8, 07. I am willing to take a risk of rock on windshield but I don't want a hugh repair bill on the rental 4WD. Any input would be appreciated!

I would check with the rental company. Alot of them will tell you in the contract that you aren't allowed to be on the Denali Highway with a rental car. This means you would be responsible if anything would happen-break down, etc. I don't remember there being any service stations on the Denali Highway. It was a beautiful drive but we took it in September.

There are also GPS systems in a lot of cars, so be certain you have permission to drive it. I have gone in from both ends and the road IS ROUGH. 4WD is necessary for the clearance. It isn't windshields you have to worry about, since the road is not well traveled. It's the break downs and no service, no cell service either probably.

There is NO way, I would consider this drive that early anyway, not before July 1. Will be a total mud slick and inpassable prior.

True - most rental car companies specifically state that driving the Denali Highway or into the park is not permitted. We've driven in without any problems so it's certainly possible but you must be prepared for the unexpected. I wouldn't go any earlier than mid May or early June. Although I personally prefer August or Sept.

Thanks for your input. I would be going there around July 10. The rental agency said it is "at my own risk" and I am very tempted...

We did and it got lucky. The worst thing that happened was that the car needed a good car cash when we were done. No dings, no cracked windows, etc. We took a risk but it worked out okay. If you do, I hope you also have a positive experience.
