No complaints here. Visiting my mom in the Tampa, FL area from San Jose, CA for $79 (yes, $79)round trip (plus taxes) for a few days in March. Works for me! Got the fare on Travelocity...couldn't even get on the Delta website.

I am much more excited about the new start up MEXUS which is planning "Ryanair and EasyJet" service from DFW to various Mexican destinations.
AA's response should be interesting, lol.

Catch Bruce McCall's funny piece in the current New Yorker - all about an airline's new policy to cut costs so they can pay higher executive salaries and perks.

Can someone explian why Delta's new fares are higher than their old ones on a number of major routes, and why ORBITZ, Expedia and Travelocity offer lower fares to many cities than Delta. Their Delta fares are often lower than Delta too.

Delta's website is awful and frequently non-functioning. This airline is certainly off to a great start.

"Can someone explian why Delta's new fares are higher than their old ones on a number of major routes.."

While I haven't looked at every Delta route, to me it sounds like Delta is simply following the same pricing psychology that is used by people like Wal-Mart and Target. You price some items at very low levels - generally those items where the consumer has some knowledge of "getting a deal." On other items where the typical consumer is less aware of what the price should be, you price those with a higher profit level.

Of course, one other possibility is they have no idea what they doing and their prices make no sense (think Kmart circa the fall of 2001.)

Mikemo, A Southwest FA friend of mine was telling me that the Wright Amendment is being/is going to be, challenged. Is that true? Is there any hope for lower fares into DFW? It just seems to be an unfair stiffling of competition...to this day I cannot understand why it is legal! Hope your new airline makes it and gives AA run for their money.

I was just looking at Delta flights to Denver from Tampa and just about everyone has them beat.

mikemo Jan 6th, 2005 10:56 AM

OO,
Well, Southwest is certainly in position to do what makes sense, unlike DAL and AA.
Unfortunately, the political powers that "delivered" DFW, including our senior US Senator and her husband's DFW Bonds are "in the way".
However, I think the marketplace will eventually win.
Thanks for the kind comments re: MEXUS.

What a hoot, Travelocity is now crowing that Delta will never charge more than $504 for a one-way ticket. One way. I paid under that for last week's trip to Paris, RT.

Delta's fares to FLA are currently above their level Monday. Love that new policy!

One saving grace for Delta: they accept AmEx points for FF tix, on Air France, for example, to all sorts of interesting places .... can you imagine 50,000 we invested per tix to to Moscow! Thank goodness we get off Delta at Hartsfield.

Just got an email that American Airlines is "matching"

JohnD Jan 6th, 2005 12:36 PM

Link below states that Continental, United, Northwest, and US Air, are also matching Delta:S-:

Does anyone really think AA's match will continue from DFW after DAL's flights go from 236 to 24 a day on 31 January?

AA is not matching the cut in change fees.

AAFrequentFlyer:

You obviously didn't read my post -- I know the fare "cuts" are centered around full-fare coach (the fares most business flyers use) . . . My point is, again, I did not think leisure fares would go UP (some simple math for you -- $378 is MORE than $268).

Perhaps you should get some glasses before you start chastising others here . . .

bamakelly Jan 10th, 2005 06:39 PM

I got really bogged down tryling to muddle through all of the posts between the first and the last, but just wanted to report (for what it's worth to everyone else) that I got way reduced fares on Delta today. All week, fares to Miami were $360; tonight they are $240.

rkkwan Jan 10th, 2005 07:22 PM

Leisure fares may go up, leisure fares may go down, leisure fares may stay the same... whatever. Patty and AAFF's point is, leisure fares has nothing to do with this announcement or the original topic of this thread.
