Delis
I am going to New York City for my annual trip. I am looking for a deli that locals go to. I have been to Katz's, the Carnegie and the 7th Avenue. Can someone recommend a locals' kind of place in Manhattan? Thanks.

Where are you staying?
Local to us New Yorkers, at least Manhattanites, is what's in walking distance. That said, I live downtown and go to Katz's when I'm in the mood. My family has been going since at least my granparents in the 1920's. I'll sometimes go to Artie's on Broadway and 82nd or 83rd if I'm working on the Upper Westside. You'd probably be hard pressed to find a local at the Carnegie or the Stage. |
Ess-a-Bagel 3rd ave between 50-51 and 1st at 21st
Second ave deli at 2nd & 10th st |
On 6th Avenue, as you face the Fox News building at 1211 Avenue of the Americas, to the left down the street from the building, on 6th Ave, around 47th, is a fantastic deli. Don't remember the name, but remember the food was outstanding.

2nd Avenue Deli - 2nd avenue and 10th street in the east village.

I am staying part of the wk in park slope and the other part near times sq. i know the city pretty well but not the boroughs. thanks.

Try Sarge's on 3rd Ave near 37th. Brisket over latkes - too much of good things? Nah...
|
It's been a while since I used to hang out in Park Slope, so I'm no help there.
Near Times Square, you have Manganaro's Hero Boy at 492 Ninth Ave, btw 37th & 38th, for classic Italian deli fare. It's not open for dinner. |
Second Avenue Deli is my favorite but keep in mind, they serve no dairy.
|
Try Russ & Daughters in the Bowery. The greatest bialys, lox & homemade cream cheese. Not the best of neighborhoods in NYC, but worth the trip.
|
Ditto on Second Ave. Deli, it's authentic & kosher, not just kosher-style. AVOID the Roxy and Ben Ash, they are terrible.

kzahn was right about russ & daughters. It is an excellent place to get bagels and lox or whitefish salad or the different varieties of fish. But you have to take it to go and it's not in the bowery it's in the lower east side off houston street. I live in the neighborhood and there's great shops and restaurants and we need the business. 2nd Avenue deli (east village) is a great deli for mouth-watering pastrami and cornbeef sandwiches.
