Delay on 93 near Hoover dam?
How bad is it? I need to get to the airport from I40 -> I93 on 12/31. Wondering how much extra time I should leave.

There is really no way to predict this ahead of time. Most of the time, there are only minimal delays. With excessive traffic, which you may encounter on a holiday weekend, it could take somewhat longer than normal. Or, if they have an accident on or near the dam, everything stops. Unfortunately, there are no easy alternate routes.
I'd check with Arizona or Nevada Highway Patrol traffic information phone number or web sitesa few hours before reaching there. |
You could always take AZ 68 to Laughlin, then NV 163 to US 95 and head north to Las Vegas that way (or take I40 to the US95 intersection).
US95 is not as well traveled as US93 (and is not a four lane divided highway), so it could take longer to go this way, but you'd be sure of no issues because you do not cross Hoover Dam. This is your only alternative route from the Kingman/I40 area and Las Vegas. Keith |
That adds 1h to the drive time. However, if that's close to be guaranteed time, I would take it over I-93. I was there a few years back and it was slow for over 2 hours. thanks!

Hi again Cheerful... I've responded to a few of your posts tonight :) I just traveled from I40 to North on 93 over Hoover Dam to Las Vegas on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and didn't have any trouble at all. It was slow for about 10 minutes but we never stopped moving and then it was ok. I did notice the traffic was much worse going south on 93 across the dam. There was a traffic alert # on electronic billboards on the highway that had a phone number you could call to check on the status of the delay. Maybe you could do that the day you plan to pass through get the status.

There was traffic alert but the delay was about 10-15 min at the dam.
