Delaware - what do you recommend?
 

Hello All- I am considering relocating to Delaware. If you live there and have a town or area to recommend, please advise me. I am single, of modest means and would love a little downtown, community or neighborhood need, a good library, and a home with a bit of green. I have been exploring around Lewes, and the Dover area. Thank you in advance.

That doesn't explain why Delaware compared to other places. This is a travel website more geared towards people travelling to a place, not planning to move there. As far as I know, the website I gave you have forums where people discuss living in a place.

I've heard it suggested that one live in PA, and shop in Delaware, presumably because the no sales tax thing means Delaware has high property taxes.

Delaware has no sale tax and low other taxes. As I recall people may also be given tax breaks on Social Security income although I may be incorrect about that.

The fact that this is a so-called travel site is irrelevant since people ask all sorts of questions as they are trying to help others. It's when the "others" refuse to see our questions as ultimately helpful that some of us simply don't bother to answer any further.

thank you. vjp I will definitely explore the link you provided, but I was looking for personal impressions and experience. I have researched a lot already. Liz & Dukey, the property tax and no sales tax are definitely a benefit. I want a community too.

There are some lovely areas near New castle, de. Dover and Lewis are relatively close to the beaches. I like Delaware a lot. I have considered relocating there but most jobs are in Wilmington.

Hi Debit! thank you for the links and the support (I side-stepped the "why"), and Pintxos, New Castle is on my list. I looked around Lewes for 1 day on my vacation in July. I saw a cute condo with a screened front porch that I just can't get out of my mind, but it's close to the road, and faces the back of a restaurant - but just a solid wall, not the dumpsters/ back doors part. I might drive over to it on Sat night and see how busy / noisy it gets. And the traffic for Rehobeth & beaches would clog things up all summer, and on weekends.
I am looking to explore deeper into the state. I know that Wilmington has a museum, but I wonder how much greenery. I live in a city almost twice the size of Wilmington. I telecommute, so I can move anywhere in the U.S. I am working my way down the East Coast, most of which I've seen. Pacific coast I am not familiar with, & I'd have to start work by 6:30 latest, since my clients are on EST.

I love Lewes. It's seems like a very nice community with a lot of charm.

I don't know your age but if a college town appeals, you can check out Newark. It's close to Wilmington and Philadelphia.

Newark is great for the young student vibe and good pizza. There are some lovely green neighborhoods in and near Wilmington, but they are not cheap. I think Wilmington is like Philadelphia. There is a posh, old-money, green area and then there are scary run-down row home neighborhoods, where you cannot walk at night.

I have family in Hockessin and Bear, DE. Both are nice and residential, in close proximity to more lively areas with restaurants and shops. Both very livable but not quite Wilmington, with its crime stats.

If you're of modest means, my guess is that Lewes may be out of your range, unless you're OK with something really tiny. For bargains, you'll have to head west, to the other side of Route 1 or toward Georgetown. Some people refer to that area as Slower Delaware, and not in an entirely complimentary way.

Newark, site of the U of D, might be OK. Be aware that there are lots of areas with the "Wilmington" address but aren't really in the city.

That seems optimistic.

Wilmington is a pit. And having the third-highest rate of violent crime among cities in its size range (60-100K residents) is NOT a selling point. Philly has two real dumps near it (Wilmington, Camden). Not sure what that says about Philly.

My mistake was in putting a period after the sentence: "I think Wilmington is like Philadelphia." Therefore, it appears as a complete finished thought. But my entire thought was that Wilmington is alike Philadelphia in one aspect: "There is a posh, old-money, green area and then there are scary run-down row home neighborhoods, where you cannot walk at night." It doesn't mean that Wilmington is entirely like Philadelphia. Context is important. I feel like a politician who is accused of a politically incorrect comment, although the comment was taken out of context. I agree with Big Russ, the crime rate is outrageous.

Milton! Home of Dogfish head beer. You could do the brewery tour everyday and get a sweet buzz. Seriously, nice farmers market and in slower lower Delaware,

Close enough to the beach but far enough away not to be expensive. What I loved about Delaware was that when my parents turned 65 they no longer paid school taxes. Sweet for someone on a fixed income. There is no sales tax. You could fly easy enough from BWI for trips. There is another airport south of Delawre, Salisbury, Md.

Middletown, De is nice. Wilmington is pricey in the nice areas such as Greenville. Hagley museum is nice. I grew up in Dover and hate it there. Sussex county is called slower lower Delaware but that is because the pace is slower and the people friendlier. I was always freaked out by all the chicken trucks but Milton/Lewes does not have those. Three of my aunts lived in Rehoboth. Only one is left but she loves it there.

I always take guests to Old New Castle. It has more historic homes than Williamsburg, VA, cobblestone streets and along the water.
