Deep Sea Fishing in Key West
 

Hi,
I'm looking for a suggestion for a deep sea fishing charter in Key West. We are going at Christmas and I would like to surprise my huband with the gift. We have never been, so any advice would be helpful. I'm aware that we may get a little sea-sick, but any suggestions/advice for our first trip would be appreciated.

We had a fabulous experience in 2003 with Delph Fishing. I highly recommend them. We caught big tuna about 50 miles off of Key West. I had never been before, didn't care too much to go, but went along with my husband and dad and stepmom. What a thrill, this man, Bill Delph, was a true expert. He scoffed at bonita (which we would have happily eaten) and knew just where to go. We caught as much tuna as we wanted, only stopped because we were exhausted. Went back to our rental condo and cooked some that night - the best tuna I've ever had, before or since. It was also very interesting to see him barter for bait with the shrimp boats out there, using cases of beer. It is a family operation, father & two sons, they fish for giant 2000 lb tuna in Cape Cod in the summer months, Key West in the winter.

My advice? It's not for wusses - there's no bathroom on the boat (our husbands held towels in front of a 5 gal bucket), we didn't get seasick at all, because you're either zooming out there, or fascinated by what's going on with the rod and reel. Bring a cooler to leave in your car, to put the fish in upon return to the dock. Bring sunscreen, hats, & lunch (for the captain too is nice), and prepare to spend big - I think we paid $600 for 7 AM to 2 PM. Worth every penny if you can afford to splurge.

Stear clear of the boat called "Relentless". Capt. was hungover the mornig of our trip so we were a half hour behind the other 2 boats in our group. They had to get the owner of the boat to drive it who had no fishing captain experience and the mate ended up taking seaweed off the hooks as the owner kept pulling us through patches of seaweed. The other 2 boats came back with a mess of nice mahi while we pulled in with a dissapointing 1 mahi and 1 random yellowtail snapper that took a hook while we were trolling back in. Very frustrating trip.
