December on PCH

Week before Christmas, from LA north to San Francisco via route 1 PCH- what is weather typically? Have done the drive in May and was spectacular. Also are the wineries open that time of year- Paso Robles, etc? Good time or not so good time to do this trip?

Could be nice or could be rainy. You won't know until 10 days before ------ when you check the 10 day weather report.

And then keep watching for the next 10 days because the 10-day weather report is often wrong :-)

>>10-day weather report is often wrong<<

Nope USUALLY wrong.

In Sept '09 and 10 we wanted to spend some time in Big Sur. We kept watching the forecast and the day before our planned trip (both trips) the forecast was for warm/clear weather. We headed out in the morning and the Big Sur/Carmel area was "socked in" with fog. Couldn't see anything at all. Several days later in '09, the weather forecasters admitted that they were 'fooled".

Three weeks ago, we woke up in the AM - looked at the weather camera at Nepenthe - it looked clear, called Big Sur Lodge to make reservations for that evening, and "headed out". Perfect weather.

BTW, there is no thing as PCH up here (northern Calif). Between San Francisco and about Snta Barbara, it is called the Cabrillo Highway.

This can be a really spectacular time to do with trip - when the weather is clear, winter is beautiful on the coast. Just know that it could be really stormy. It will likely be something in between - some sun, some rain. Also, it gets dark early that time of year, so account for that in your planning.

You should be good with the wineries.

Hey Stu, I say the weather is one of the reasons we tend to be go with the flow kind of people in Northern California. Can't predict what it is going to be like in two days, so when the sun shines get out, scrap your plans and enjoy it. Unfortunately, that doesn't work when you are here for a short visit.
