Stumbled across this site by accident today. I'm planning a holiday from the UK next year starting in Boston, going on to Portsmouth then to the White Mountains. I've a cousin who lives in Montreal and thought I'd drive to Westport, leave the hire car at the station and take the train for a few days to visit her. A...is this a sensible way to get there and B... is the train still going to run next year? Any info would be appreciated.

Say, if you're coming from N. Conway, NH. Mapquest will tell you that it'll take you over 4 hours to get to Westport, NY, compared to 3:59 to Montreal, even though the distance is a little bit shorter.
But here's the kicker! According to AMTRAK's schedule, Westport to Montreal will take 4:35, for an average of about 20MPH. And that's if the train is on-time, which we all know doesn't happen too often.
So, in short, you can drive from N. Conway to Montreal in about 4 hours - I'll give you 4:30 if the border crossing is slow and traffic isn't the best into Montreal. Or you can spend 10+ hours for the same journey with the train.
