Sylvia,
I spent a few days in Deadwood earlier this month and had a ball. Definitely stay in a hotel located on the main drag--you're steps away from any number of gambling/dining/drinking establishments.
We stayed at the Bullock hotel--historic, yes. Haunted? So they say. Clean? Yes. Would I recommend it? Probably, but don't expect a lot. I think they were going for the Victorian look but our room just looked plain dumpy. The price was right, though, and the location was superb.
A good bet is the Holiday Inn Express, also located on the main drag. My husband has stayed there and liked it. The Franklin Hotel (part of the same family as the Silvarado, located across the street) has recently been remodeled and its public areas on the main level are always hopping.
One thing--get and use free players' cards whenever you go to a casino. On weekend nights, many of the larger casinos give away cash and prizes to players who use their cards. I had no sooner sat down at a Franklin Hotel slot machine when an employee came over and handed me a $100 bill! They were giving away $100 every 15 minutes to people using their players' cards at the Franklin/Silvarado and I was in the right place at the right time.
Lots of hiking around Deadwood, plus tons of history. It's a great place to spend the weekend, summer or winter.
