Dead Horse State Park to Moab

I drive from SLC to Dead Horse State Park on Sun Aug 31. I expect to arrive at around 5:00 p.m. for a brief visit before sunset.

Does the park restrict day visitors after 5:00 or 6:00 pm?

How long is the drive from Dead Horse State Park to Moab?

The drive from Dead Horse Park to Moab is about 30 minutes or a bit less. I don't know if they restrict visitors after 5 or 6 pm.

hey woodstockguy:

Dead Horse St Pk is nine miles north of Moab, on US 191, turn west on SR 313, then travel 22 miles to the visitor center. The park's open year-round from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
My family loved the trails & views here. Enjoy!

Hi. We took Tricia's driving directions to Dead Horse SP and it took about 40 mins. or so. At the SP visitors center, a ranger pointed out to us an alternative back to Moab - on a 4wd drive road called Long Canyoon Road. If you will have a 4wd, it is a very scenic drive. But I would not do it in the dark!! The ranger said it was easy, and I asked if there were any drop offs, and he said No, which is a bit of an understatement. He told us there was one section of rocks, which we figured out later was one rock that dropped 1 -1.5 feet. The drive started on a flat, wide dirt road, and then all of a sudden we made an s-turn and we were deep in a canyon - and the road became much narrower. At the above-mentioned rock, we were unsure whether to chance going over it, b/c the road was quite sandy at the time and we didn't want to skid out. The road was too narrow to turn around, so we went over the rock, no problem. It was a bit scary just not knowing if any more surprises were in store for us, but there were not. You really are in the middle of nowhere once you get off the highways out there, and we saw no one the entire drive and there were no signs. The Long Canyon Road ends at Potash Road, about 8 miles from Moab. Potash is worth a drive even if you come off of I-191 to do it for a few miles. It's basically below Dead Horse and it passes some arches and 2 petroglyph panels, which I find fascinating. Have a great trip!

We did Long Canyon a couple of years ago and thought it was a great drive. We went up the Shafer trail which I loved and came down Long Canyon. I wouldn't recommend the Shafer Trail if you don't like drop off!

Hwy 313 is the only paved road up to Dead Horse State Park that I know of.

We went last month, and were told that the park is open 24 hours. You're still supposed to pay the entrance fee on an honor system.
